Redskins need to make more yards on their running plays, so they can have confidence to call more running plays.

2 Interceptions for Cousins is a big improvement. The interceptions were catch attempts that batted the ball into the air, not really bad throws.

It would be nice if he Defense would to allow less than 32 Points. What happened to Jason Hatcher?

//

"•Jason Hatcher, on the other hand, easily had his worst game of the year. After notching at least four quarterback pressures and one tackle in each of his first two games, Hatcher was not able to record a single tackle and only pressured Eli Manning on one occasion. It was especially unexpected considering that he played on a season-high 47 snaps against the G-Men. Meanwhile, fellow starting DE Stephen Paea tallied two QB pressures and a stop for the second consecutive week."

Snap Judgments: Redskins @ Giants - Hogs Haven

Hatcher might have been double teamed on some plays. The tackles and sack numbers may not reveal Hatcher's true value of contribution.

"Comedian Chris Rock had some things to say about the soap opera involving Robert Griffin III and the Redskins while the team was playing the Giants Thursday night.

Rock was upset about Griffin being relegated to clipboard holder behind starter Kirk Cousins, so he took to Twitter and unleashed some harsh words for the organization."

Chris Rock rips Redskins over treatment of RGIII | FOX Sports

RG3 progressed last year as back up, holding the clipboard, and being ready to go in, if the starter was injured.

RG3 may have other problems, that get in the way of his performance as a quarterback. But if there are other problems, RG3 needs time to work them out. So for 6 Million Dollars, or so, it might be wise for the Redskins to try to give RG3 an opportunity to grow in judgment, as a back-up quarterback.

//

"Setting aside the turnovers and expanding the view to career numbers, Griffin is slightly more accurate than Cousins (career completion percentage 63.9 Griffin, 61.1 Cousins) and he has a somewhat higher average yards per attempt (Griffin 7.6, Cousins 7.3). But Griffin gets sacked far more often (Griffin 8.7% of dropbacks, Cousins 3.7%), negating any advantage that Griffin has when passing. When you factor in yards lost on sacks, the offense gains an average of 6.3 yards every time Griffin drops back to pass compared to 6.7 for Cousins."

"On first down, any catch that fails to gain at least 45 percent of the yards to go counts as a failed completion. That threshold climbs to 60 percent of yards to go on second down, and 100 percent of yards to go on third or fourth down. Not every failed completion is created equally, but for this article we make things binary, summing up successes and failures. For DVOA, there are fractional points involved where a 12-yard completion on third-and-15 would generate some partial success."

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Failed Completions 2014

"Rk Quarterback Completions Failed Pct. DVOA Rk

4 Kirk Cousins 126 24 19.0% -82.6% 35

38 Robert Griffin 147 49 33.3% -68.0% 15 "

"Doing a better job of distributing credit for scoring points and winning games is the goal of DVOA, or Defense-adjusted Value Over Average. DVOA breaks down every single play of the NFL season, assigning each play a value based on both total yards and yards towards a first down, based on work done by Pete Palmer, Bob Carroll, and John Thorn in their seminal book, The Hidden Game of Football. On first down, a play is considered a success if it gains 45 percent of needed yards; on second down, a play needs to gain 60 percent of needed yards; on third or fourth down, only gaining a new first down is considered success."

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Methods To Our Madness

In 2014, Cousins had 19.0 Percent failed completed passes, compared to RG3 with 33% failed completions.

Completing a pass should be evaluated by down and distance, for getting a first down.

"But,” Gruden added, “it’s just becoming a little bit of a nagging-type deal for him and we’ve rested pretty him well yesterday and today. Hopefully he’ll feel a lot better come game day.”

Hatcher, 33, has not recorded a sack since the season opener. His 17 quarterback pressures, though, are the second most among all 3-4 defensive ends, according to ProFootballFocus.com.

Asked if Hatcher’s current injury could be connected to the knee problems he experienced last season, Gruden acknowledged that it's possible. Gruden did not specify which knee is currently bothering Hatcher, though he's been wearing a brace on his right knee."

Redskins to monitor Hatcher's knee closely | CSN Mid-Atlantic

"3/13/2014: Signed a four-year, $27.5 million contract. The deal contains $10.5 million guaranteed -- a $9 million signing bonus and Hatcher's first-year base salary. 2015: $3 million, 2016: $6.5 million, 2017: $7.5 million, 2018: Free Agent."

Seems like Hatcher is helping other players get sacks, pressures.

Can Hatcher stay healthy? Should Hatcher be waived before next year?

The Dead Cap figure is apparently the irreversible cost against the cap for that year.

the 4.5 Million for 2016 may be more doable than the $9,518,000.00 for this year, 2015.

When the Redskins are facing a defense that is good against the run, the skins need to have a jumbo package.

The skins are ranked 16th or 17th for run blocking and second level run blocking.

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2015 OFFENSIVE LINES

The Quarterback has to call a good play at the line of scrimmage. But the coach needs to put together a jumbo package. Practice should be for 2nd string offensive tackles learning to play tight end.

The offensive line is not making the holes for the running backs against good teams.

I enjoyed watching Jason Campbell try to tackle Cam Newton. Jason Hatcher did not get credit for any Tackles or sacks against Carolina. Hatcher is currently ranked 37th in hurries. Saw Carolina double team Hatcher a few times. Hatcher was in on some plays that were canceled by penalties.

Chris Cooley gave an analysis on Wednesday of the Redskins' defense lack of Pass Rush.

He said that either the coaches were giving rigid assignments to the Defensive Line and Linebackers, or the Defensive players lacked ingenuity, spontaneity, and responsiveness. Joe Barry was supposed to open up pass rushing opportunities, but it has not happened.

Kerrigan and Hatcher are being given "A" quality wages, but providing "C" Quality playing.

Ryan Kerrigan is ranked 62 in Quarterback hurries, at this time. Jason Hatcher is number 29 ranking. The rankings are updated every few days.

Defensive Hurries: 2015 NFL Season

Joe Barry says Hatcher is explosive. But Barry does not say why there are not more sacks and hurries by the defense.

It may be more difficult to coach BOTH a system, and responsiveness to opportunities. Gruden just seems like he is snookered, no clue. No leadership on Defense ingenuity/responsiveness.

I can't believe I haven't seen this thread before. if you had told me before the season that we'd be 5-6 at this point, I would have been excited. right now, I'd say we're legitimate favorites to win the division.

Against the Cowboys, Monday Night, Gruden did put in a Jumbo package on some run plays. Used second string Offensive Tackles as Tight Ends. Seemed to help get more yards running.

Jason Reed continues to get penalties. Made a few good catches though.

The Defensive hurries rankings are updated during the week, but no record is kept of progress or falling off, from week to week.

Kerrigan has been moving up, since recovering from his injury, Today ranked 36th

Jason Hatcher is ranked 52nd.

Preston Smith is ranked 72nd.

Chris Baker is ranked 82nd

Ricky Jean Francois is ranked 133rd

Defensive Hurries: 2015 NFL Season

For Jason Hatcher's sack against Buffalo, it more looked like Jason Hatcher was pushed into the Quarterback by a Buffalo linesman. But a sack is a sack, and Hatcher seemed to be part of the pressure on Taylor, QB.

Washington is 24th in Run Blocking

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2015 OFFENSIVE LINES

The Run game may not be important, as long a big losses are avoided. 2 Yards a carry, may be all the Skins need on first and second downs. 3.56 Yards per run average, may be enough, just to eat up some clock to keep the opposing offense off the field.

Scoring too fast can come back to haunt you.

The Skins passing attack is reliable enough for 3rd and 6 yards to go.

Jay Gruden has said he wants to avoid 3rd and long, but the Skins passing game has often made up 6 or 8 yards, for now, whatever is needed.

Washington Offense is rated 20th overall, and ranked 13th in passing. So 2 or 3 yards on a run may be enough for the Skins to win games.

Being a long-time Philly fan, I couldn't help but do this photoshop after last night's terrible loss:

Looks like Washington has a legitimate quarterback again

I know RGIII was supposed to be that, but I never saw him as anything other than a scheme wonder

Cousins looks like the real deal.....making a few mistakes

But I wouldn't expect anything different from a guy who has started what 18 games or so

That barely puts him over the rookie experience level

Surround him with talent like that TE you guys have, and that offense will roll

Still have a number of issues on the line.....

I would draft OL, WR,CB,DL, to plug the holes

Safety could also use a little help

But the team looks like it is heading up not down finally

Unless there is a change in the standings, the Redskins will play San Francisco in the first week of the playoffs.

If the Redskins win or lose to Dallas, this week, it will not affect who the Redskins play in the playoffs. So how much effort should the Skins put into beating Dallas this week? Why play the starters? Maybe let the starters heal up this week?

It seems that Jason Hatcher did not get NFL credit for a sack, when there was a face mask penalty, on that play, late in the Philadelphia game, Saturday night.

the 49'ers arent even smelling the playoffs

the possible opponents for washington are

Minnesota
Green Bay
Seattle

Either Green Bay or Minnesota can still win the nfc north....

And the other will be the wild card with Seattle

Carolina & Arizona have locked up first round byes, so it is just a matter of who plays who now

and yes...i think Gruden should rest a bunch of starters this week
