MLB Trade Deadline--July 31st

Royals get Cueto but give up three left-handed pitchers with Major upside.
Will they now trade Chapman--and also get rid of Votto?

MLB.com: The Official Site of Major League Baseball has all the latest rumors .

KC simply has decided to win it all this year and will scrap the future to do it. Not a bad move since they already are the best AL team by far. They strengthened the one area where the team is weak - starting pitching - and should be very strong for the playoffs.

4 years of "control" for the team that gets Hamels.

The best part of tonight's game with NYY/TEX on E$PN is all the trade talk.
It sounds like your DET is in it to win, not trade.

As for today, Mets acquire reliever Clippard from the A's.
Angels land veteran Victorino from Red Sox .

Jays aren't gonna get pitching because it'll require giving up 1 or 2 of their top talents. For example.. if they want Cole Hamels... and Phillies are willing to pay part of the contract which they'll have to as no team is gonna take on $25m a year pitcher then Blue Jays are gonna have to give up at least 1 or two.. of the following: Daniel Norris, Dalton Pompey, Jeff Hoffman and Max Pentecost.

Apparently, San Diego has their whole roster up for grabs.
I can't believe they'd even think of trading Tyson Ross .

Their starting staff is still weak.. in a ALDS, that would be a massive problem. With Cueto KC only has 2 real starters. Need another guy.

Well, Ross came up in the trade talks because the Orioles wanted Upton, Ross and another guy for Gausman and another guy.

Detroit is trading. They are 12.5 back in Central and 4.5 back (5 games). Only team that should really be buying is the Orioles being 7 games back of the Yankees with 6 games left against them, and same number of games played.. and only 3 games back of the Wild Card. Assuming the 2 games the Orioles and Twins have on hand over the Astros are wins, Orioles 3 games back from top Wild Card slot (home field), 1 game back from Astros.. and Twins are 1 game back.

Tulowitsky and LaTroy Hawkins to Toronto for at least Jose Reyes .

And some minor league talent.. Blue Jays got short end of the stick here. But I am gonna laugh because Tulo is 30 years old with a bad hip who is gonna play on turf. He's not gonna play out his contract. Blue Jays are gonna give up Jeff Hoffman (one of those players I talked about).. at least.

This is all kinds of stupid by Blue Jays.

After losing tonight, Detroit just about has to sell. Drop 2 of 3 to Boston, then already dropped one to Tampa, when they needed to start winning to justify buying...not going to work. Price and Cespedes will almost certainly get traded. They should go all out selling, start the rebuilding process and get it over with, the window has likely closed for them, but they probably won't, and will try and put together a team next year to challenge, which will likely mean taking on another long term contract that will cost too much for too long and hurt them in the long run, but that is another story. Being a Tigers fan is kinda frustrating.

Seriously? I know you haven't have a title since '84 but the Tigers had a good run with 4 central titles. What let you down was poor year over year moves. Bullpen last year for example.. and thank you for that. ;)

Regarding Price and Cespedes: the agent for Price has made it pretty clear that they are not anywhere close on a deal. This looks like even if they kept Price for the duration of the season, he goes the way of Max Sherzer and they end up getting nothing for their best pitcher. And two years in a row that would be a disaster. So working a deal for Price seems to be a must and makes very good sense.

Cespedes on the other hand has told friends that he wants to stay in Detroit and their talks have supposedly gone better. I think they should keep him as I highly doubt they can find a better replacement to hold down that outfield spot for the next five years. The Tigers could have had Cespedes four years ago and had the inside track on him. Willi Horton loves the guy and the organization has been very very happy with what he has done so far this year. Then the Prince Fielder came up out of nowhere and that took the money the club had and they abandoned the Cespedes deal. Now they have him and they should keep him.

Davis probably is going away but his value is iffy at best but they should get something for him.

Yes - the Tigers bullpen has been a total disaster and completely lacking any consistency. They are the opposite of Kansas City who has built their bullpen into a force to be reckoned with and it more than has made up for a mediocre starting rotation.

The problem with keeping Cespedes is money. Detroit has a metric ****ton of money committed next year, JD Martinez and iglesious both going to get big raises next year, and Detroit has to add some quality pitching in the off season if they want to have any chance next year. Pitching does not come cheap.

Realistically, to my mind, it is time to start the rebuilding process. i can't see them getting enough better next year to be likely to make the playoffs, and trying is just going to slow the rebuilding process. They will likely try tho.

I doubt the Blue Jays are done trading. Tulo might be part of another deal so the Jays can get some much needed pitching.

Everything you said is accurate. I simply feel that Cespedes is the best they are going to get for left field and at the plate and they need to keep him even if it means speeding some of that pizza fortune. At least you are getting an everyday player that can help you each day. Paying 200 mil for a pitcher - well - I can see how that can be debatable especially a pitcher.

He can't be traded without permission now. The trade caused no trad clause to kick in. So if other trades are on require some other talent like a Pentecost or Stroman. Jays screwed pooch here.

Jays did exactly what they should do. They got rid of a terrible contract on a guy who could no longer play shortstop, was injury prone, cost the Jays several games this year, and was on a long term contract. They picked up a younger guy, on a smaller contract for five years who's been the best shortstop in the game over the past number of years and who still hits .300, in Colorado, and when he gets to Toronto he'll hit .330 plus and he has double the homers and double the RBIs and is a character player who wants to win every game. The Jays gave up a couple of pitching prospects along with Reyes, but they may have given up those same guys for a rental pitcher and that would have been screwing the pooch.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize a no trade clause kicked in. But I still wouldn't be surprised if he gets dealt for pitching. Does anyone think Toronto was Tulo's #1 place to go(carpet and all)? Some other teams with a lot of pitching comes calling I wouldn't be surprised if he's moved. Of course some of that is dependent on if the Jays have another SS in the wings. That, I have no idea.

Well, the latest word is that the Tigers are looking at buying, not selling, which seems all sorts of silly. They have to go from playing .485 ball, to playing ~.600 ball for the remainder of the season, which is not impossible, but really unlikely...

Agreed - I would sign Cespedes - trade Price and Davis and get some young prospects for them.

A lot of teams are within 5 games of both wildcard spots in the AL and nobody, I mean nobody, expects both or either Houston and Minnesota to hang around until the end. That means a lot of teams are still convincing themselves they have a good chance.

I would change "convincing themselves" to "fooling themselves". And the cost of fooling themselves will last for a long time. In the case of Detroit, they can sell now and start to rebuild a stripped farm system(read Billy Beane's comments on the Houston farm system, they are important for GMs to understand...depth in the farm system means having the prospects to make moves, and be able to bring up solid contributors to the team at low cost), or they can stand pat or buy and leave the farm system thinner, and make it harder to build a team for the future. Either way, they are unlikely to make the playoffs. Detroit is not a .600 team over the course of 60 games.

Detroit should be looking for "controlled" pitchers who have low contracts and many years left on their contract.
Washington has many of these with a deep staff--and Strasburg is still rehabbing with many more in their farm system .

They got rid of Reyes contract but picked up another bad contract. Reyes and Tulo are injury prone. Tulo hasn't played more then 140 games since 2011. Tulo has bad hips and turf is gonna shorten his career. Also Coors field has a slow infield. That hellhole you call Sky Dome is fast.

Blue Jays gave up arms that could have gotten Shields or Hammels. Long term arms available. So you screwed the pooch. Enjoy falling further behind as Yankees and Orioles have 2 games in hand on the Blue Jays.

With the sustained play of the Astros, Angels, and Twins--the East will be the odd-division out this year.
They'll simply knock each other off too much.

Hammels isn't going anywhere from a Cub staff with only him, Arrieta, and Lester as stable--and they're really not the best 3 around are they?

Do the Blue Jays have a shortstop in the minors--can anyone move to short on the ML team.
Tulo could move to 2nd but I see him DH-ing even more .
