Tom Brady, Patriots get hammered by NFL in deflate-gate punishment[W:189]

I love that this is all that happens to them and a little league team (Jackie Robinson West) had their entire championship taken away from them.

I have to say, in the balance, this is a pretty big punishment for the Patriots. Some were unrealistically calling for Brady to be suspended for the season, but that would never happen. Brady, for good or bad, is a significant star of the NFL and he and the Patriots draw big road gates and TV ratings whenever and wherever they play and losing him for four games will hurt that and also hurt the Patriots for the season.

And perhaps the biggest part is that it further stains the Patriots as cheaters and knocks Brady off his pedestal. He'll have this in his obituaries, years from now.

Another sports legacy tarnished... onto the weather.

I can't stand the Pats. They are the dirtiest pro sports team in my recent memory. I'm actually very glad this happened, although I'll admit on here (and not in front of all of my New England friends who are boohooing like babies right now) that the evidence against Brady was a little, uh.....thin.

Man, 4 games?! Imagine how many games he would have received had the NFL had any actual evidence!

First, when the appeal happens Brady's game number will go down. Second, Goodell is showing himself to not only be a giant hypocrite, but also a person who does not know how to actually hand down punishments. Should Brady be punished? Yes. Should the Pats be punished? Ehh maybe, but sure give them a fine. Should the current punishment be what is was based on the Wells Report? No. The Wells Report basically starts with an assumption, and when anything or anything challenges that assumption then that challenge is simply more probable than not wrong.

I'll bet you, as time goes on, you'll find that this penalty, for the most part, is related to the lack of cooperation by both Brady and the Patriots in the investigation and the Wells Report. However, had Brady and the Patriots cooperated fully, their suspension and fines might have ended up being greater.

It'll be reduced to 2 games.

But yeah this more likely happened then not, maybe, possibility, that the footballs could have been deflated.

4 months of nonsense over a couple of PSI's in a 45-7 game. Thank God it's over.

Patriots did cooperate, Brady did not. Kraft let the Wells Report people interview personal 4 times and do what they needed to do, but it was on the 5th time that Kraft said they were starting to interfere too much. It still however does not excuse the Wells Report. The ref who did the measurement said it is his best recollection he used one certain gauge to measure the pressure, which would show more than not that there was no tampering, but the Wells Report said that since it is possible the ref used the other gauge, then it is more probable than not that his recollection is wrong.

which they might of had Tom Brady actually gave them what they asked for.

I posted that in another thread. $10 billion organization like the NFL using un-calibrated $.99 gauges.

Seriously if the PSI is so important then the NFL has got to be professional about this rule. The footballs need to be filled, checked and tested by ONE NFL official, with a calibrated gauge, and he never, ever lets the footballs out of his sight for 1 hour before the game to 1 hour after. The way it seems to have been before all this happened was amateur hour.

Twice as long as ray rice's ban. Absurd

Most of the NFL's ire comes from the fact that Brady wouldn't cooperate with the investigation.

It's not the police and district attorney, Mr. Brady. It doesn't work by "rules of evidence" or or by "beyond a reasonable doubt". It's your employer who wants to know what you were up to while you were on the clock. And if you stiff them they can fire you just because they've lost confidence in you.

Oh go ahead and admit it. I've been saying this was gonna blow up for three months now and ...BAM ! I can gloat vindicated ! ;)

At least its only one divisional game

Quite right. Brady's agent and the NFL union reps will appeal. In the end I think he'll get a 1 game suspension for not cooperating (turning over his phone for text messages). Bottom line is as was already said, Rice got less than what Brady's getting with video tape evidence decking his then girlfriend. No actual evidence exists linking Brady. Hell, there was more evidence in "tape gate" in 2007.

This is Brett and the pine tar all over again - this isn't over.

So knock your wife out but as long as you cooperate you're all good?

I would be fine with the justice system handling the criminal matters anyway.

your tears would make more sense if Tom Brady was serving jail time for cheating.

ps - the suspension became indefinite - as in for ever - and was reduced on appeal.

This was pre-determined, Brady is a scapegoat for the NFL after the horrible season they had and how they mishandled ray rice etc
