What David Beckham Meant To Soccer, And The World

Chris Waddle agrees with me, your Holiness. ;)

" ..."I think there have been a lot more talented players in the world. But he made the most of what he has got," said Waddle, who made more 100 appearances for four of his clubs - Newcastle, Tottenham, Marseille and Sheffield Wednesday - while winning 62 England caps.
"He has got a terrific image and used it very well. He never had a trick, wasn't particularly quick, but he was very good at set-pieces and deliveries, he made chances and made goals and was fantastic for clubs.
"He said the right things, he sold shirts, he put money in the tills wherever he went and conducted himself well." ..."

BBC Sport - David Beckham not even in top 1,000 players - Waddle

Chris Waddle? The guy is just bitter because his club career was a missing the success that Beckham has enjoyed, I would challenge anyone to write down 1000 epl players that have been better that Beckham. Such an absurd claim when you consider Beckham was a key component of the 90's united squads.

Ask any professional footballer, manager or pundit to rate Waddle and Beckham and you'll see that Waddle's opinion carries weight. He has been Footballer of the Year (1993), won 3 French league titles and was key to the 1990 WC 4th place - during all those years of Beckham's captaincy England won the Tournoi de France and the FA summer invitational.

TBH you wouldn't have to name 1,000 (Waddle's using hyperbole - y'know, that thing you're using when you call Beckham 'legend' and 'icon') in order to demonstrate that this hype over his retirement is ridiculously over-blown.

lol that's the textbook definition of damning with faint praise
But fair and true.

go on the continent and ask people about Chris Waddle and not many people will remember him and his statement does Beckham a massive diservice, 100 players maybe ( still a stretch).

Well, Marseilles fans voted him the 2nd best OM player of all time after JP Papin. Not bad, eh? Marseilles is on the continent, right?

yeh other than the teams he played for obviously. But 2nd best player of that power house Marseille....hard to argue with that. cough

What a quitter. One more month here and he was eligible to pay taxes.

yeh im sure he was worried about that!
To be honest his season here has been a bit of a disappointment: he didn't change his haircut once!

No seriously, it was great to have him. He was sympathetic to the fans, photogenic on tv and had a positive attitude overall. What more can you ask from a 38 year old Becks? He will be missed.

Strange coincidence that he retires the same year as Fergie who almost put an end to his modelling carreer.

yeh I was suprised when he went to PSG just because they are such an emerging team that I thought he would be a little out of his depth given his age. Woulf of liked to have seen him retire in England but im sure he enjoyed winning one more trophy.

Beckham has twice been runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year

115 career appearances at an international level

Beckham was the first British footballer to play 100 Champions League matches

Has won League titles in 4 different countries

First England player to score at three World Cups

Has the joint-second most goal assists in European Championship finals history

Third in the Premier League's all time time assist provider chart, with 152 assists in 265 appearances

97 total club goals.

if that's moderate then im the pope.

Hey Pope...

That doesn't say much. Winning championships on teams he played on isn't hard. Man U, Real Madrid, and PSG.. huge spenders and the MLS is like playing again league two teams. Also he scored 97 goals in 523 league matches. Ryan Giggs has 114 in 660 matches.

why he sold out stadiums in the US as well? ;)

He was hyped from the start of his signing by LA Galaxy. None stop bombardment by US press. ESPN and Fox Soccer (Skysports) became the Beckham pr channels.

I think you forget how good beckham in the 90s especially in 1999. Too be fair though you were watching a lot of lower division matches back then. ;)

And I think you forget that his fellow teammate Paul Scholes retired (for good of course) and the same type of career as Beckham.. but lot more trophies. ;)

still increased revenue in he MLS and sold out stadiums and yes im aware he was part of a team when he won those titles but he was a vital part of that united 90's team, even picked up UEFA Club Footballer of the Year when they won the Treble. People tend to forget how good he was in the late 90's before he became this global icon.

He didn't increase revenue for the MLS. He increased revenue for the LA Galaxy. I never said he wasn't good, but he wasn't great.

This is the point Higgins can't seem to get his head around. No one is saying he wasn't a good footballer and a great media operator. It's just he wasn't a great footballer, certainly nowhere near the level that the endless tributes and plaudits would suggest. I'd say he's on the same level as those other two retiring big names; Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher, but he's no Zinedine Zidane.

My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder.
Zinedine Zidane
