Today the county Board of Supervisors decided to plunk down $15M to build World View a spaceport. They could be fixing roads but World View is important.

What? You've never heard of World View? Well they are one of the companies on the leading edge of making the world a better place!!

Here, they even have a website - World View Experience

And they have some of this!
With our proprietary high-altitude balloons, World View offers an accessible, affordable way to access nearspace. As a Voyager, you will enjoy a suborbital spaceflight unlike any other. Gently floating up into nearspace with World View, Voyagers now have the unique opportunity to experience what space philosopher and writer Frank White calls the “Overview Effect,” the unexpected emotional reaction and unparalleled perspective-shift that comes from seeing our planet suspended in space.

For more than fifty years, astronauts have spoken poignantly of the life-changing shift that results from seeing the world with this unique vantage. National boundaries vanish, the conflicts that divide us seem to disappear and the need to protect what Carl Sagan called our “pale blue dot” becomes both obvious and imperative.

See, if you actually look at earth from space you whole world view changes and you become a better person!!

Yep, this is EXACTLY the kind of business venture that Tucson needs to promote with taxpayer money! We NEED more businesses that charge [starting at] $75,000 for a 100,000 foot balloon ride and those businesses definitely need $15 Million dollar, taxpayer funded spaceports.

Now I know, some of you are sitting there thinking "Gee, there must be something more to this."

Well, you're right, there is. As it happens [purely by coincidence, mind you] one of the principles of World View is Mark Kelly, astronaut husband of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

And that, folks, is why the road behind my house has been under construction for two years with God only knows how much longer to go and why the only business that prosper in Tucson are call centers.

That reminds me of Scott Walker using taxpayer funded dollars to build a new Arena for the Milwaukee Bucks while at the same time claiming that government doesn't create jobs.

What kind of call centers do they have in Tucson?

Well, you can always move to Sedona and enjoy Gaia health, and the Earth Art world. How about viewing the world through the lens of a crystal? ;)

Like, all of them!!:lamo

Intuit is down here. AOL is down here. There's two or three online tool retail places right near me. Geico is here. There's a collection outfit called Afni that just moved in. Comcast just came in. Sears is here. Living Social is hiring.

Hell, the city council is PROUD that we're pulling in all these call center jobs. - Steller: New call center a step forward

Tucson needs people to get rid of their tumbleweed front yards. Boring little town.

To attract 400 jobs at $ 55.000 pa $15 millions sounds okay. We do not know enough, but I think the bet is probably reasonable in a business kind of way based on the info..

Sedona is a nice but it's a bit of a drive. When I really feel a need to get my hippie on I just head down to Tubac. It's kind of like a KOA version of Sedona.

Well, if they manage to pull in 400 jobs at $55k on average it won't be because they're offering $75k balloon flights. Maybe if they're selling some weed on the side or something it could happen.

My brother has a place there, and his wife's band performs there all the time. Sedona does nothing for me, but my GF loves it, so...

That's not entirely inaccurate which is kind of sad. The place has TONS of potential but often can't seem to get out of its own way.

Sedona is a t-shirt and Indian trinket stop mecca. Ain't what it used to be. For the time spent I'd rather be in Quartzite looking at the real free spirits.

I like Tubac. Bisbee is still a great place to be for a weekend.

Sorry about World View. It hurts us all. Give them time and Arizona will compete with Florida for manmade tourist caca.

I go down there every few months for a day, have cousins down there too. But I could never get into Tucson, its just not my kind of place.

Yeah, even Jerome was heading to tourist hell last I was up there.

Tubac really is a neat little place to spend a day. A lot of the shops are kind of "Nogales Norte" but there's enough cool stuff to make it worth the drive. I haven't been to Bisbee in a few years but used to enjoy it and my understanding is that they are getting a pretty good reputation for food and beverage. My only problem with those places is that if I drink too much I inevitably come home with "an art" that end up sitting in my garage because it doesn't really work in my house.

I have a few of those from Bisbee, no less. Absolutely beer beautiful stuff.

One day when we get together I'll show you a picture of the octillo object d' art made from rebar that I humped out of Nogales. It's hidden in our side garden.

I have a dream of taking a commercial flight into orbit before I die. Failing that, a high altitude balloon trip like this might be something I would be willing to pay to do once it has a proven track record. But I agree, it isn't something the tax payer should be subsidizing.

I prefer Prescott. Now awash in retirees but you can find the old cowboy town. Big Nose Kate died there in the Pioneers Home in the 1940's. Passed through Jerome a few times. It's as if the good ship SS Sixties went down and the survivors washed ashore at Jerome.

If Sarah Palin lived in Quartzite, she could see California.

And this surprises you why exactly?

Bisbee is a trip. It is still a place where the weird turn pro. Luther is correct, good food is no longer hard to find there. If I'm not mistaken they have two craft breweries in Bisbee.

And, Doug Stanhope. Big article about him in this week's Phoenix New Times

Jerome is holding on but is in my opinion becoming maybe too upscale artsy.

Prescott has a fantastic bluegrass festival around the 4th of July every year that we rarely miss. It's downtown and it's free. Prescott is a fine town.
