Top Ga. lawmaker criticized for Klan comments

A state lawmaker’s take on Civil War history and rise of the Ku Klux Klan has been met with condemnation from Democrats and calls for House Speaker David Ralston to discipline him.

State Rep. Tommy Benton’s comments, reported on AJC.com Thursday, came in exclusive interviews with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in which he railed against threats to Southern heritage he described as “cultural terrorism.”

but I think he really jumped into the swamp of craziness when he said, that those who wish to remove Confederate memorials and monuments from public lands are "no better than what ISIS is doing" and also that the KKK “was not so much a racist thing but a vigilante thing to keep law and order,”

The ISIS destroying things of historical significance comparison is a stretch but not outrageous. The KKK comments is beyond insane. Some people are clueless.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Ditto for ISIS, which is a terrorist organization that also helps to reduce crime, fixes potholes, provides free healthcare and a social safety-net for the people it 'governs'. The KKK would commit acts of brutal terrorism one night, and then the next go hunt down a deadbeat dad and force him to support his family the next.

I see it as more than a stretch because the Confederate memorials could quite easily be placed on privately-owned land, ISIS (Daesh) is turning historically significant structures into rubble - just a bit of a difference.

OK, there would be a little problem in moving the Stone Mountain memorial.

I do agree moving isn't on par with destroying.

I think the government of that state needs to find a way to vet their people better. KKK membership is an AUTOMATIC disqualifier for ANY kind of public employment.

It's quite obvious that Tommy Benton is, if nothing else, a KKK sympathizer. That in and of itself makes it inappropriate for him to be involved in government of ANY kind. He needs to be removed from his position.
