Members of the church frequently picket military funerals, arguing that the deaths of U.S. troops overseas are part of God's punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.

Bailey said damage is estimated at $10,000.

WBC goes to show that extremism is not limited to Islam. Any group that has hate in its heart can use any religion to justify their bigotry. If soldiers dying is a punishment for the homosexuality in our nation, I wonder if they think this fire has anything to do with divine anger. Probably not, selective rationalization is the rule for extremists such as these.

The WBC was planning to picket a military funeral at a church down the street from me last summer, but the Hell's Angels showed up and scared them all away

I actually appreciate the WBC. They have made homophobia associated with bat**** crazy. And by doing that, they've helped to make the GLBT community more accepted.

There is no defense for the actions of Fred Phelps and his cult of followers. The man has a few screws loose and he is extreme. But where you fail to compare Islam to Christianity here is that the extreme Christians aren't beheading people, blowing themselves up as suicide bombers in crowded markets or hijacking planes.

Now, don't get me wrong. I believe Islam is a religion of peace, just as I believe Christianity is a religion of peace. There are extremists on both sides, but to compare what Fred Phelps does with what Islamic extremists do is a feeble attempt at best. The actions of Fred Phelps sicken me, but no one dies at the hand of Phelps or his followers. Can the same be said about the other extreme in your comparison? I didn't think so.

I wasn't trying to compare the WBC fools to terrorists, I'm sorry if it came off that way. Not all Islamic extremism takes the form of bombs and beheadings, even if that's what gets air time in the US. I was just trying to point out that these people are freaks regardless of which holy book they use to justify their venom
