Question Gender equality

I'm new, and I don't know which forum this belongs in, but this is my best guess, since the forum description includes stuff about paternal and maternal rights.

Anyway, before I post anything else, I'd like to know everyone else's position on gender issues so I have some idea what I'll be getting into while posting here.

Oh, yeah...I haven't posted a poll before (anywhere), so this may not work well.

Re: Gender equality

I think you forgot the option: "I'm a total hypocrite--so I may blather a bunch of nonsense one way, but my true feelings will be evident over time." Welcome to the forum!

BTW--I think bigotry is no gender or color and people attempt to oppress/control others in many various ways and by myriad means.

I don't know feminist analysis well enough to make a complete evaluation. In terms of labour market economics, we have to focus on inefficient discrimination. This will be direct (i.e. wage orientated), indirect (i.e. occupational crowding) and in terms of asymmetric family power (e.g. forced into underpaying flexible labour to support the male's dominate role)

Re: Gender equality

Both genders are discriminated against, however women are discriminated against more. You can find many societies worldwide in which women are second class citizens and none for men. Men mostly face discrimination in programs like Affirmative Action or various quotas.

Oops again...I should have specified that I meant primarily in the US, and to an extent, other Western-type countries ('cause I want to include Australia). I think that, in the US at least, both are discriminated against, but men are discriminated against more. I also think that this has only been true for about 15-20 years. Before that, my opinions are complex and unfinished. By complex, I mean I don't understand my own opinions very well yet. Bear with me here, I'm still in college.

On another note, I've argued for various sides of smaller debates within this issue, and been kicked off sites before because I get, um, adamant about things. Of course, I never found a place where more than maybe one other person would have voted for that 'both are' option, so maybe I'll have fun here.

I don't call people names or anything, but I tend to get upset at attitudes like 'yeah, well (he/she/it) deserves it' no matter the gender involved. How easily offended are people around here if I point out how bad that argument is? I've only really been banned from maybe 4 other sites.

What do you base this on. Men still occupy most of the spots of power and influence in most western countries. Women still get paid less for the same jobs and have to chose between families and careers.

People get offended, but if you're cogent and not purposefully incendiary (i.e. being an unrelenting dick with no sense of humor *ahem* perhaps I should say "humour" .... ) you'll be fine. Just be you, honest, and sincere (unless you're sincerely a dick)--you're good to go, in my opinion.

BTW--this thread probably would have fit better in the Sex/Sexuality forum.

You'd have to adopt a Marxist 'divide and conquer' understanding of discrimination to support that view. The orthodox view will use a measurement technique (following Oaxaca and Ransom's decomposition technique) to measure female underpayment and male overpayment. The latter reflects the consequences of nepotism
