| Re: Gender equality I'd say both sexes are discriminated against.
In some cases the discrimination is almost a quid pro quo for example women may get less pay for the same work or may be less likely to progress beyond whatever glass ceiling they face because of expectations they will bear children or that they will take up the dominant parenting role and the opposite of that is that if the parents divorce then women are more likely to win custody - even if they weren't the primary carer. |

Its through limited opportunities that a plethora of other inequalities are then spawned

| Re: Gender equality To a large extent I agree with you, I am part of a father's support group for contact with their children and from our research those countries with better labour and gender discrimination laws also tend to have better examples of involvement by both parents in their children's lives.
It's no secret that Sweden is closest in terms of male and female salaries and labour laws - and more Swedish fathers play a decent 50% share in their children's upbringing. |

Once you break through the more vicious discriminatory practices and ensure equal opportunities, the positive effects from family responsibility equity are in easy reach.
In Britain we've encouraged labour market participation, but seen substantial growth in low wage labour. Given women are more likely to receive those low paying jobs, we've been reliant on blunt measures such as the minimum wage to narrow gender wage differentials. We're only now seeing the need for more active anti-discriminatory laws. Not surprisingly, family responsibility demands are heavily skewed towards the female |

I posted a thread about the wage-gap (myth, in my opinion) in the economics section. http://www.debatepolitics.com/econom...-gap-myth.html (Wage-Gap Myth)
Oh, do people actually use the debate forums around here? I haven't had a real debate before, but I'm thinking it looks like fun. I've got a week coming up (after my finals, but before my daughter's 4th birthday) that I'm going to be bored out of my mind... |

Oh, yeah...I haven't posted a poll before (anywhere), so this may not work well. | I vote for "both".
Women get the short straw in the work force, men get the shaft in divorce court. It generaly ballances out over all. |
