I like the Parade, in all honesty, I just don't like the politics that are behind it. New Coup explained it well though... if it is for the gays and if it is also for the Gippers, then that makes much more sense.

He is talking about students fighting battles for others, because that is part of being a student. They get educated and they fight battles. It is in the syllabus. That was college for me, do you mean that it wasn't that way for you?

And I just don't like that there are no politics behind it. As stated before, it's just an excuse for gays to thrust their alternative lifestyles into the faces of others who do not share their tastes.

If gays tried to go by way of referendum for their rights to marry and the state majority said yes, I'd say more power to 'em. However, when they prance around in tasteless clothing to make a spectacle of themselves, I find less enthusiasm in their cause.

Can I hold a "straight white male" pride parade? Equal rights, after all...

I'd support people who are "real" people that happen to be gay, but I'll fight hard against people whose sole meaning of self-distinction is that they're gay.

Yeah, I got that. It's just that I didn't understand how that had anything to do with my question as to whether any civil liberties were granted (cringe -- it doesn't seem right to me that any person have the power to grant civil liberties) without being fought for first.

Just attended Utah Pride 2008 on Sunday. My partner and I ran a booth for a local therapist guild. A lot of families were there and everyone had a great time. This year there will be close to 30,000 attendees. That's fairly significant for a small state like Utah.

Could someone maybe tell me why it is called gay pride? What are the gay people are so proud of? An accident of birth? Or a lifestyle choice?
