Any discussion of sex outside of basic biology will be hopelessly politicized to the point of absolute irrelevance, and has absolutely no hope of impacting the actual practices of children. |

Of course, my teachers were nuns, which would have only made matters worse.

They did talk about abortion a lot. But not sex. |

They did talk about abortion a lot. But not sex. | They didn't talk about that either, at my school. Whole different generation, of course.
I can't remember when I first heard the word. I do remember when I was very small that I used to get "adoption" and "abortion" mixed up; I didn't know what either one meant, exactly, but they sounded the same, and I knew they were somehow related. So I must've at least heard the word at some point, but I can't remember the context.
No, at my school, we focused a lot on the things that really matter. Like penmanship.
The teacher would write a poem on the board in flawless script, and we'd all copy it: 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves/ Did gyre and gimble in the wabe/ All mimsy were the borogoves/ And the mome raths outgrabe.
And then the teacher would say, "Little 1069, you only have to copy down to here" and the whole class would snicker, because I was left-handed and dyspraxic and god knows what else, and it would've been a waste of time to expect somebody like that to do what the rest of the class was doing.
But still. It was preferable to having the nuns "get real" with us about sex.

Probably causing abortions. |

lol, they would always warn us girls about becoming pregnant too but without the sex talk. The moral of their stories was simply- stay away from boys. |

Honestly I don't understand the hysteria regarding Catholic schools. I'm a super-liberal gay man and I didn't have any problems with it. I just understood their deal and didn't challenge them over ****.
They were also way more even handed about everything then the totally politicized public school system. There was this big stink in the public schools over how teachers reacted differently to ****** (black slur) and ****** (gay slur), focusing more on punishing the use of the former then the later. Anyone who said ****** (black slur) would have to go to reeducation camp or something while ****** (gay slur) wasn't usually punished at all.
I thought it was hilarious because I knew exactly what would have happened in Catholic school- one days detention for cursing- for either word. They wouldn't have given a **** about the broader political implications- they were too busy teaching and doing their jobs. |

I often refer to it has if it were "running a gauntlet". Some poor saps got poeple pregant and were married before they graduated, some caught stuff they will live with forever, and often the only difference between them and the people who emerged unscathed was just that...luck.
On the contrary though, I think that everything can be changed, including teen behavior, it just depends on the method and cost. Teens are not stupid by default, but they often have stupid parents and instructors...

A lot of kids are already embarrassed by the textbook speak anyways and if it will wake em up and make them practice safe sex which could safe their lives? It is worth some kids getting embarrassed. |
