Masturbation may prevent prostate cancer


Frequent masturbation may help men cut their risk of contracting prostate cancer, Australian researchers have found. It is believed that carcinogens may build up in the prostate if men do not ejaculate regularly, BBC News reported on Wednesday. The researchers surveyed more than 1,000 men who had developed prostate cancer, and 1,250 men who had not. They found that men who had ejaculated the most between the ages of 20 and 50 were the least likely to get cancer. Men who ejaculated more than five times each week were a third less likely to develop prostate cancer.

Yeah, I don't understand it. It's like saying if I exercise my calves my eyes will do better.

I'm not challenging its veracity, in fact I assume it's right, I just don't understand the biology.

Let me try and give the less scientific but more understandable form. The prostate helps make sperm. If you masturbate alot, you have to keep making new sperm. That keeps the fluids followings out of the prostate to go make the new sperm. Cancer essentially infects the cells around it. That means if a cancerous cell mutates in the prostate, it will infect the cells around it and cause cancer. However, if you masturbate, the infected cell will leave the prostate with the sperm fluids and be unable to infect the cell.

The evidence they presented in the OP isn't great though, and its seems more like correlation than a solid causal link. Although its speculation, I'd estimate that it does decrease the risk of prostate cancer, but only slightly.
