Sounds like my husband.
Actually, this is perfect for me, though. I wanted somebody who was smart like me, but who was self-taught (not college-educated) like me.
And, like Garp, I wanted to marry an avid reader who would appreciate my writing- but not a writer, who would compete with me.
My husband's perfect on both counts: he's the quintessential reader, but with no literary aspirations whatsoever. I even tried to help him write a short story one time- like, "C'mon, let's try to write one together, just for fun"- and he couldn't even get beyond writing the first couple of sentences. His mind, gifted as it is, doesn't work that way.

Its not the reading that bothers me. Read away, increase your base of knowledge. Thats never a bad thing.

Its when they take a condescending attitude towards others(i.e. my logic is superior to yours), or are self-proclaimed geniuses. I usually find self proclaimed intellectuals or geniuses are rarely ever that. They may be smart, but for me a genius operates on a whole different level and doesn't need to validate their intelligence by telling you about it. They just are.

Yeah, that's true. I know some geniuses. They're a little dysfunctional.
I worry about my kids sometimes, who have outlandishly high IQs.
Fortunately, neither shows any sign of intending to live up to his intellectual potential (one wants to be a welder, the other seems intent upon leveling the playing field for the rest of us by smoking himself retarded).
It's okay. I want them to have happy lives more than I want them to be exceptional.
In my experience, geniuses have trouble being happy.

I have disagree some people are geniuses and are arrogant about it, Issac newton from all accounts was a complete ******* but there is no denying his brilliance.

The same way some women are beautiful inside and out it seems wrong almost but it happens.
