The power of abstinence

It was inevitable in my opinion....so I am not suprised.
Quote:
The nation’s teenage birth rate rose for the first time in 15 years, surprising government health officials who had no immediate explanation.

The birth rate had been dropping since its peak in 1991, although the decline had slowed in recent years. Yesterday, government statisticians said that it rose 3 percent from 2005 to 2006.

U.S. health officials said that it was possibly a one-year statistical blip and not the beginning of an upward trend.

But several experts said that they have been expecting an increase. They attribute the rise to increased federal financing for abstinence-only health-education programs that do not teach teenagers how to use contraceptives.

Some key sexually transmitted disease rates have also been rising, including syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. The rising teenage pregnancy rate is part of the same phenomenon, said Dr. Carol Hogue, a professor of maternal and child health at Emory University

“It’s not rocket science,” she said.

Whilst i dont think abstinence only sex ed is a good idea.I dont really understand why sex ed is needed that much its more a attitude of feeling free too talk about these things.

To me at least, its not the concept of explaining sex to kids (knowledge is generally a good thing), its the way it is explained. By removing the reality aspect of this education, ie. kids are going to eventually become curious, and explore this Hard Wired, aspect of humanity...we are doing a great injustice to a generation and should be wise enough to expect the results we are seeing.
I can only imagine poor little Sally Smith, thinking she has a grasp on her understanding of the body she lives in....suddenly finding out the stork is really just a bird, and her play time with Billy was much more than just something that felt really good.

Buncha dip****s.
I've already heard them doing it.

Did you know there are drug-resistant strains of both gonorrhea and syphilis now?

Re: The power of abstinence

A conclusion that the very recent small rise in birth rates are due to abstinance programs is an overgeneralization by critics that hate it and would rather be handing out prophalactics and talking up all the joys of liberalized anything goes sex. Instead of merely suggesting there might be a connection between the abstinance programs and a rise in teenage birthrates, those with an agenda immediately latch onto the data and declare rather absolutely it has to be that program. Consider the following two year old data by the CDC:
---------------------------------
Using data from the National Center for Health Statistics, the nonprofit Child Trends research center reported in June that the 2005 birth rate for teens ages 15 to 19 was 40.4 births for every 1,000 female teens, which is 35 percent lower than the peak of 61.8 percent in 1991.

Though birth rates varied across racial and ethnic groups, numbers were down across the board, Child Trends said. For white teen females, 26 out of every 1,000 gave birth in 2005. The same year, the birth rate for non-Hispanic black teen females was 60.9, and for Hispanics it was 81.5.

(an example of demographic extremes)

Marin County 5% 5
Tulare County (Caucasians) 18% 50
Tulare County (Hispanics) 40% 100
---------------------------------

The above obviously shows that teen birth rates vary enormously for reasons that have to do with socioeconomic and demographic reasons. Especially along racial cultural lines. For those that don't know, Marin County is a seaside bastion of rich though liberal Caucasians while Tulare County is all agricultural overflowing with farmworkers. Thus small variations in year to year data are more likely to have something to do with what is going on in those cultures with the highest birth rates. In fact the problem is that those teen cultures with those high birth rates tend to ignore most advice of authorities to the extent a significant amount of sex occurs without any protection at all. Even in this day when they all know that might cause pregnancies, might spread STDs, and they could even catch AIDs. No surprise if one simply considers the usual signals from sleazy Hip Hop media they are more likely to pay attention to. I'd expect simply having the FCC clamp down on television and cable sexual content would have way more effects. -dave

Right. It could be anything.
Possibly global warming is making teenagers hornier and more fecund.

Texas has long had the highest teen birth rates in the country.
While statistics show that hispanics count for 65% of these births, they also show that half of all teen pregnancies in Texas end in abortion, and that whites are more apt to terminate teen pregnancies than hispanics.
So it's not necessarily about hispanics getting pregnant earlier or more frequently, it's about catholics being less likely to encourage their teenage daughters to abort than protestants or the non-religious... and those who come from generational poverty being less likely to even have the money for an abortion, or to see teenage motherhood as something that will significantly alter or effect their quality of life (since they've always lived on welfare anyway, and will simply continue to).

There is so many variables to something like this its very difficult to come up with any solution on what the main causations is.

It is plausable though that less knowledge of protection would result in more pregnancies.

But i mean surely these kids know if you dont wear a condom you can get pregnant?Sex ed is really very simple stuff the concepts arent difficult at all.

I suppose teenagers are more apt to use condoms when condoms are made more accessible, and when there is some modicum of adult or societal approval of teens attempting to obtain them, rather than punishment and condemnation, which merely makes young people sneaky and careless, but still does not stop them from having sex. Nothing does.

There is also the matter I touched on in my previous post, which is generational poverty and how that kind of life provides little incentive not to become a parent as early as possible.
Although I don't know the solution to that.

Re: The power of abstinence

Who are these kids that can be dissuaded from using condoms because of stern looks from CVS employees? I've never met those kids.

When I worked at circle K, there were several employees on my shift that wouldn't sell condoms to kids under 18.

They would ask for ID, and then refuse the sale.

Generally when I caught this happening, I'd catch the kid as they were walking to the door and stop them. Open my register to sell the condoms to them, and then see them on their way.

It's not just stern looks, there are lots of older employees of these places that won't sell them to teenagers, plain and simple.
