Why is masturbation such a taboo subject?

What's wrong with it?

Truely the safest of sex to be sure.

What is it about exploring, and educating yourself about your own sexual foundations that causes such strong emotions throughout society?

Or, is the attitude towards masturbation changing amoung the younger generations?

Should masturbation be discussed in sex-ed classes?
Should parents talk about it with their children?
Is there gender issues with masturbation? Ok for one gender, not ok for the other?

If there was less of a negative stigma regarding masturbation how would that effect society?

If the subject of masturbation was not taboo then talking about it would not be a problem.

Why is it taboo to begin with?

I like the comment on religion hating anything that feels good.
But is that the only reason?

Its like everything else in life. Nothing wrong with it, in and of itself, but if it becomes excessive it can become a problem. I know a couple that divorced because the guy masturbated to online porn 6 times a day and never wanted to have sex with his wife.

I know. I think if I had a day off and nothing better to do, and no wife, I might be able to manage it 3-4 times. I am willing to admit I have looked at my fair share of internet porn, but six times a day is unbelievable. He must eat ginsing root for breakfast or something.......

Definantly. In my grandmother's day if you did it, you certanly didn't talk about it. Then we had the hippy movement (easly confused with a bowel movement), and now we have sexual material all over the media.
