What is a reasonable age of consent for sex in this day and age?

I believe in most US states is around 16 years old.

Is an setting a specific age the right way to go about this?
Should it be 18? 14?

Thats a tough one to tackle. To me there is a big difference between a 38 year old and 14 year old having sex, vs. a 16 and 14 year old having sex. I would guess 15 or 16 is a decent line to draw, if the other party is of adult age (18 or older). If both parties are underneath 18, then I think a little leinieancy is in order. Keep in mind this is totally going off my gut feelings, and no deep intellectual thought whatsoever. Like always.......

The idea of an age of consent does not not apply to the real world, because people mature sexually at different rates.

It is however, the best we can come up with. I would go with 16 for adult+minor, w/in one year for minors under 12, and within 2 years for minors 12-15.

Keep in mind that I just pulled this out of my as$, and it has no bearing on the real world. Case-by-case would be ideal.

IMO the only purpose in bothering with age of consent laws is to protect children from sexual preditors. To that end I would personaly set the age of consent at 17.

I would have prosicuted anyone who solicited or actualy had sex with anyone else under the age of consent, be they 45 or 16; though obviously the manner of prosicution and what an apropriat sentence would be would need to be determined on a case by case basis.
