Hypothetical: The Draft is Reinstated. You have been placed on a committee to decide whether or not women should be drafted. What is your stance and why?
I only ask this because I once ignorantly thought it was obvious, women should be drafted as well. But when the question came up in class, almost every girl started saying how women aren't equal to men and how they don't agree with the women's rights movement. Those that didn't either didn't speak or they said how they would go to Canada or some stupid *. Personally, I was ashamed for them. I am a strong advocate for completely equal rights across the board and am barely off the fence as a proponent of conscription if needed. So what do you think. |

Women are already serving in the military, I don't see any compelling reason to prevent all women as a group from serving.
as of march 2005:
· 350,000 women are serving in the U.S. military -- almost 15 percent of active duty personnel.
· One in every seven troops in Iraq is a woman.
· 35 women soldiers have died as of March 2005.
· 261 U.S. military women have been wounded in Iraq. NPR : Wounded in War: The Women Serving in Iraq
does anyone have any more up to date numbers? |

Current Mood: | Re: Conscription begins again. Women where are you? Well I imagine even if both men and women could be "drafted" women would be able to escape the draft far easier than men in that women can get pregnant and we're not going to send pregnant women off to serve. Furthermore they can get pregnant while serving which further complicates matters. There's no reason women shouldn't serve but if you set up a situation where people are forced to serve, both men and women, women are apt to just say they can't serve cause they're pregnant. And I imagine it would cost lots of time and money to confirm whether they were or weren't in fact pregnant.
I wonder how Israel deals with that? Surely they excuse pregnant women but is it enough for a woman to just claim she's pregnant or do they somehow check and follow up on it?
Also another point would be that women have a certain more set fertile period. A biological tock that ticks away that they have to consider when thinking about delaying a family. Men don't have such a clock. Thus, asking men to serve while they're in their early 20's doesn't necessarily hinder their ability to have a child later on while asking a woman to give up her early 20's for the military puts her at risk for having trouble conceiving after her time is served due to her older less infertile age.
I think, but I'm not certain, that even in Israel women serve for a "shorter" mandatory time then men do.
Tashah would know.

I'm leary of bomber pilots, not because they can or can not do the job but the whole POW effect. |

While women are drafted in Israel the overwhelming vast majority of them are not put into combat or even trained for combat. |

Lean: Independent Gender: Awards: | Re: Conscription begins again. Women where are you? I am pretty sure non-combat roles in our military would be sufficently filled by volunteers, and drafting women to fill those roles wouldn't be necessary. And you don't draft fighter pilots and the like.
The question you have to ask yourself is if you want women being drafted into ground combat roles. I for one, don't think they should be.
