I guess that pretty soon, instead of seeing the Midwest Dairy Association's ubiquitous slogan, "Got Milk?", on every billboard and subway station wall, we'll be seeing the Merck Corp's: "Got Gardasil?"

Although about three times more common than cervical cancer, which strikes about 10,000 Americans and kills about 3,000 Americans per year, oral pharyngeal cancer is still an extremely rare illness, affecting about 28,900 Americans per year, over two-thirds of them male.

Being Certified Pharmacy tech... I have heard nothing concrete about "mandatory" vactinations for HPV...Human papaloma virus.
Oral sex does not "cause" cancer...HPV does.

I have heard nothing concrete on transferance of HPV strictly through kissing.
Even HIV can not be transmited through kissing alone and thats a tough virus thats easy to transmit.
Information that stems from or was produced by Merck... should be highly suspicious. They make the vaccine and to assume a company wouldn't peddle bad news and pad thier research in favor of filling coffers is naive.

Just an observation.

Unlike HIV, HPV transmission does not require an exchange of bodily fluids; it is transmissible via skin-to-skin contact.
Ergo, oral HPV is transmissible via kissing, which would be oral-to-oral transmission, or via oral sex, which would be oral-genital transmission.

I too have my doubts about the motives of Merck, Pfizer, Glaxo, Squibb, and all other major pharmaceutical companies.
But, at present, what's the alternative?

It's not me saying it.
It's the drug company, Merck.
I didn't say I necessarily agreed with them. I was just passing the news along.

I am sceptical of that information... It reminds me of the time the came out with the news that hair dye caused cancer... then they revealed how they conducted thier research. They fed rats huge quantities of hair dye....?

It is still a virus and virus' act in predictable ways needing certain perameters to transmit. I reserve my opinion on how valid the research and how accurate.
The once believed HIV could be transmitted thru mosquitos too.... A virus being a virus... it just wasn't so when the dust settled.

I'm skeptical as well, especially in light of the fact that the segment of the population most affected by oral-pharyngeal cancer is middle-aged to elderly African American males.
I've seen no conclusive evidence that African American males engage in more oral sex than other people.
African American males are not statistically more likely to be homosexual than white males.
I've seen no evidence that they're more likely to engage in heterosexual oral sex than males of other races, either (in fact, apocryphal evidence says they're less likely to).

So. While the presence of human papilloma virus in the throats of patients with oral-pharyngeal cancer is certainly compelling, I think more research is definitely warranted.
I'm sure there are pieces of the puzzle that have yet to be uncovered.

In any event, this type of cancer is very rare (while HPV, both oral and genital, is extremely common, affecting more than half of all Americans).
So, news of a possible link between oral sex and cancer is probably not cause for panic.

These "vaccines" are unreliable at best and cover a very limited variety.There are many strains of hepatitis, heb B is just one. We do not have a "cure" for STD's or cancer.
