Conversion therapy is unethical and banned by the APA. It is against ethics to treat someone for something that is NOT a disorder.

A couple of my friends went through conversation therapy and it almost ruined their lives. It certainly ruined a great relationship.

People hve been driven to suicide because of conversion therapy. It also enforces a perspective that since a few claim they have changed, that everyone can change. Finally, there is no evidence to support it, and it seems more likely that the people who use it want to financially profit off of the people who would try these services rather than genuinely help them.

So it is harmful, creates stigma, and is a scam. Is it worth all that so that a few gay people who feel guilty about who they are can delude themselves into thinking they can wake up straight? No. Any loving Christian would never force a person through that much pain and torment unless they themselves were some sort of bigot or sadist.

If the participant is willing and understands that the conversion therapy is not endorsed or sanctioned by licensed professionals AND they understand the dangers involved with pursuing a "therapy" that does not treat a disorder, then by all means, it's their life.

Now if the hypothetical church is advertising conversion therapy to the public or in any way coercing participation through misrepresentation of the "therapy", that's cause for a fraud case at the least.

I don't care what some Christians believe. It is unethical to provide treatment for something that is NOT a disorder. If the person being treated acknowledges this, it is their dime. Otherwise, this is a dangerous and illegal practice.
