If you don't want your 10 year old child to be in a bathroom alone for fear of this sort of thing...go in with him or her.

There are all sorts of BAD people, from serial killers down to true pedophiles. Take personal responsibility for your own safety and the safety of those you care for. Passing laws has NEVER stopped a crime, only provided guidance on punishment for those who are caught.

Are you of the opinion that Target employees wouldn't follow such a person into the restroom if they believed something suspicious might be going on? Or maybe you're saying that had this 10 year old been a boy followed into the bathroom, tough doodly to him because the perv went to the "correct" bathroom so he must not mean to do anything, "nothing suspicious going on here".

A pervert peeking into the stall of a small child of the opposite sex is a rarity. What's also a rarity is the incidence of a transgendered person needing a public facility.
Why is the government bothering itself with such an insignificant issue?

the problem is that male / female / transgender, perverts come from all walks of life there is always the risk that kids are going to be abused by someone

Actually, there is. The actions of a few should not dictate policy for the many.

Yes there are all sorts of bad people. There are also multitudes more of generally good people. Moreover, like any feared "Other" identified by a group dynamic there really aren't that many who are true pedophiles statistically speaking; we just hear the horror stories trumpeted in the media whenever they come to light.

There was the infamous McMartin Preschool Scandal in California back in 1983 which is credited with creating the subsequent hysteria about the prevalence of child molestation in the USA. Turns out that nothing actually ever occurred despite all the hype.

No one is saying that pedophilia does not exist. But the idea of a transgendered bathroom law attracting hordes of pedophiles is just more hysteria. If you truly fear such a thing, then do like most parents do when accompanied by preteen kids, either go inside with them, or stand outside to prevent anyone from going in who should not be in there when the child is alone.
