Why Pride?

Well that isn't exactly fair. I'm not happy with those people either. That's like saying I don't like Christians because that group of morons that protest the funerals of fallen soldiers. That's in your face Christianity.

I don't disagree with you - had this thread been about that church group - Westbury, I think it is, I'd have had similar dismissive comments about them and the way they approach promoting themselves. But this thread is supposedly about hatred of gays and a disingenuous attempt to claim there's no gay agenda and that gay people just want to live and let live. For the most part, most people just want to live and let live, gay or straight, and it's the in-your-face types on all sides who aren't interested in just letting people be people.

That's my experience too--that most people, whether gay or straight, just want to live and let live. And then there are the "activists" who don't. In my normal world, being straight or gay is just part of who you are, and not necessarily very interesting either so long as the horses aren't frightened, so to speak.

If you're my type of people, you'll be fine.

"Straights" are afraid of "gays" because, you know, gay is a choice, and "the gay" is contagious, and they're afraid if "the gay" becomes acceptable, they might "turn gay" too.

Most straights are not that way..... I am seeing more acceptance over the past 5-6 years.

It's not perfect....but we will all get there sooner than later.

I have plenty of Christians friends that could care less also..... which sort of shocked me when I hear them speaking on the subject. Maybe because most of them attend more modern type churches?

a. It's not a wedding cake, and

b. Nobody's got an "in-your-face attitude". As the stigma of homosexuality eases and people learn there's no difference between gays and straights, visibility increases.

Gay's are no more shoving their lifestyle down your throat than hetero's have done for centuries.

I find nothing wrong with anyone expressing love for another person. Neither does "God".

Isn't the whole idea behind Gay Pride parades an "in your face" exhibition?

Love the last part - thanks for the best laugh of the day!!

Actually, at least here in Toronto, the Gay Pride parade arose out of police raids on gay bathhouses 40 yrs ago, where a lot of men were rounded up as "foundlings" and had their lives and careers literally destroyed by the exposure. As a result, a lot of people in Toronto's pretty quiet gay community formed a protest march and it morphed into a celebration of being gay - no more hiding in the shadows and being fearful of exposure.

So, no, the "whole idea" behind it isn't in-your-face exhibitionism, but it has morphed into a lot of the campy side of homosexuality along the way. Here in Toronto, there are millions who line the parade route and enjoy the outrageous parts of it and the majority aren't gay. It's a big boon to the city's economy and that's why it's a full week and this year it was a full month long celebration as Toronto was the site for World Pride celebrations.

None of this bothers or affects me one bit in my everyday life, so I welcome it. It's the other legal nonsense like cakes and dating sites that bother me.

I agree that Gay Pride Parades have become quite the spectacle, and definitely are a must see for anyone interested in an afternoon of good fun and entertainment. I saw one in SF back in the AIDS days. Man. It's almost like the event was choreographed.

Floats with ghosts and grim reapers....that is a memory that will stick with me forever.

Here we go - if you don't like the gay agenda, you're either homophobic or you must be a latent homosexual. Not possible that you could have reasonable, sane objections.

I thought earlier that you might be naïve, but I was the naïve one. I actually thought you might be sincere in your OP and question. You're clearly not.
What are those sane and reasonable objections you speak.
If there is an homosexual agenda to for others to accept then there must be a Christian agenda to force others to be ruled by Christians.
Living in Louisiana you see it all the time.
Happens quite a lot in Mississippi and Alabama also.
Both agendas are equally repulsive.

The in your face types?

You know, people who have the gall to be who they are and not ashamed of it ,rather then be the people others want them to be and thank them for it.

Yeah it seems the people that bitch and moan about people being in their face with their sexuality are unable to ever describe this.

Q: "So what's an "in your face" type of gay person?"
A: "You know, the ones that go to parades."
Q: "So like people that go to Irish pride parades are in your fave about being Irish?"
A: "No, it's like the people that talk a certain way, they want you to know their gay."
Q: "Oh, kind of like the way preachers speak differently to let you know they are preaching. So that's in your face Christianity?"
A: "No, you know the guys that have to constantly remind you that they are gay, they are the ones shoving it down your throat."
Q: "Oh like a person that is a Christian and wears a crucifix necklace and talks about his beliefs is shoving Christianity down your throat?"
A: "No, you know the ones that go to gay bars and hold hands in public with their partners."
Q: "Oh kind of like the people who go to singles bars and hold hands with their opposite sex partners are in your fave with heterosexuality?"
A: "No, it's the people who are using their sexual identify politically."
Q: "so like the people that use their religious identity politically are in your face with their religion?"

So apparently what an "in your face gay person" is, is a gay person that expresses themselves exactly like everyone else does. It's just that their gay.

So an in your face gay person is just like any other person the only difference is they are gay.

I like to wear very expensive suits, Italian shoes and drive an expensive car.I work hard, and should enjoy the fruits of my labor.
That must mean I must "be in their faces" for those less successful than I.

Maybe I should wear sackcloth and ride a bike so as not to hurt their feelings.

Isn't the whole idea behind Gay Pride parades an "in your face" exhibition?

To me, the idea of being in your face is a person going out of their way too make you know they are (insert description here.)

A person that goes to a Greek festival, or a Greek festival itself isn't in your face about being Greek or enjoying Greek culture.

People who attend Irish pride parades on St Patrick's day aren't in your face about being Irish or liking Irish culture.

The only difference between "in your face gays" and everybody else seems to be that they are gay. And the only people that bitch, moan, complain, cry, and caterwall about it are the people that don't like gay people.

You're going out of your way to cry about something that doesn't have anything to do with you. It sends like you're in my face with your disdain for my sexual orientation.

In fact the pride parade itself is a commemoration of a riot. A riot that happened in a private club when city officials and all the little busy bodies were so concerned about what people were doing in their club away from them.

So really the parade is a reaction to people getting into their face.

It's easier for the police not to go storming into a gay club and arrest people, and harass the gay people that went to the club. They went out of their way to get all up in the faces of gay people.

You go out of your way to get into gay people's business.

It seems the fact that we don't bow down to you and others like you is what you mean by in your face.

You know, people often complain about people who wear nice clothes and drive fancy cars. "Who are they trying to impress by driving a Ferrari?" Is a question I oftentimes hear. It's a bit narcissistic to thinkv someone buys a car to impress you, or wears clothing to impress you, or even attends a parade to get in your face. I went to pride a couple of weeks ago. Straight people and how they felt about it was the last thing on my mind. I went to look at hot gay guys.

So I thought of something reading your post, and thinking about the way people talk about folks who wear really fine suits and drive hot convertibles. And yes it's the same thing. Their envious.

For much of my life I was a bit jealous of straight people. They get to be normal. But looking back i crossed some pretty high hurdles. I came out to my catholic family. That took a lot of guile. Once I did I was free to do things that would normally be considered girly. I can enjoy a penicalada at a bar and not worryb that it is a "pushy drink." And I can enjoy a nice single malt scotch. We're prior to coming out i was convinced being seen enjoying a salad or penicalada would have painted a giant rainbow over my head.

Now I'm not saying all straight guys are bound for beer and scotch. But the ones who compassion about in your face gay people probably think this way about things. Maybe nit booze but other things defiantly. Satin sheets or liking flowers enough to have a favorite one so forth.

I've actually seen it with several posters here. Guys wear those kind of clothes are silly. So forth.

So I guess I really do have something to be proud of. Just like you. I'm not rubbing anyone's gave in it. Neither are you. You accomplished something.

It just dawned on me that they could be envious. All this time I thought if my sexuality as a disadvantage. Thanks for posting that. That was a stroke of brilliance.

Poor dear, such a victim. How do you survive?

The sad part about this is tasty you think he's trying to be a victim.

You are claiming to be a victim of in your face pride. Pride isn't about you. I didn't go to the parade to confound you. Straight guys were the last thing on my mind. I'm not proud of living out because it makes you feel a certain way. I'm proud because it took courage to come out to my catholic family. I'm proud of them for not doing what they think the church would expect. That's why I'm proud. It's not about you.

Poor dear, such a victim. How do you survive?
Quite nicely,thank you very much.
I survive with the support of a loving wife and darling daughter.
I survive by working hard and making sound investments.
I survive by playing by the rules.

Do you have a problem with that?

I take it you've never been to a Gay Pride Parade?

Have you ever been to Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras here in New Orleans?
Those two pictures you put up are tame compared to what straght people wear and behave here.
So a lesbian walking down the streets wearing electrical tape over her boobs is "in your face", but women from places like your own home town flashing their breast to drunken fratboys for cheap beads isn't?

Have you?

Most homophobes stay away from the parades. They prefer a nice, quiet corner in the local gay bar. Or rest stops.
