Prince--Gay, Straight or Who Cares?

No they haven't changed their sexual orientation, no matter how much you want to believe that to be the case.

Research over several decades has demonstrated that sexual orientation ranges along a continuum, from exclusive attraction to the opposite sex to exclusive attraction to the same sex. And in some cases, some people can fluctuate between being attracted to the opposite sex more so than the same sex, to being attracted to the same sex more so than the opposite sex.

That's why it's very likely were are all bisexual; we just tend to fall onto our respective sides on either end of the spectrum.

Read the article I posted. It's not me "wanting to believe that to be the case." It is the case.

Nope, it's still not the case.

First off, that article is not even credible, because there is no way to judge the credibility of the subjects reported of change in sexual orientation. The simple fact is that there was no way to determine if the subject's accounts of change were valid.

But back to the topic at hand, genetics plays a role in predisposing some people to be gay or bisexual, and then early experiences in the womb and in childhood (many of which we do not fully understand) shape the ultimate direction. People may broaden their horizons and change some of their sexual interests based on their experiences well into adulthood, but for the most part, one's main sexual orientation is basically set in place by adulthood.

It's not black and white. Lot's of people start out with gay relationships when very young and then switch over to be exclusively hetero or vice-versa. You are apparently too dogmatically hinged to your narrative on this subject to have a reasonable discussion.

I am not stating that everything is black and white Calamity, I'm saying that you're wrong.

And once again, nothing you've just stated said disproves anything in my argument.

My gripe with your argument is the absolute nature of your statement, "It's a known fact that no one can change their orientation."

This is simply not true. Many people have indeed changed orientation over time. Some go from hetero to gay, some go the other way around, and some do something inbetween. Prince went from whatever he used to do to being celebrate. It could be that, in the end, he became asexual.

Looking back, that was probably a incorrect statement to make on my part. I'd say that sexual orientation is something that is genetic; something you are born with.

I'd be more apt to say that sexual orientation is a combination of innate feelings, environment, conditioning, and emotions. I do not think it is controlled by just one factor.

By "preaching" I refer to someone who speaks out against the gay community, opposing gay marriage. If doing so while he himself is gay, bi or queer, yes. I have a problem with that.

Now, if as is described in the article, someone is queer in the fluid sense that he or she experimented with same sex relationships only to evolve later into a hetero-normative who found religion...well, that is what I prefer to see us discuss in this thread.

I understand and appreciate you clarifying that. However your thread title focuses on Prince's sexual orientation so I suppose it is natural that folks focus on that, or reject a focus on him as they honestly don't care what his sexual orientation was. Or anybody else's for that matter. Which is sort of where I was going with that. I suppose it is possible for a gay person to honestly believe being gay is wrong but I suspect such people are very rare. Hopefully it will become just as rare among the heterosexual group.

And since I personally think same sex marriage is a whole different argument from the normalcy or okayness with being gay, I don't fault a gay person who rejects same sex marriage. I have a couple of gay friends who in fact do think we should leave the definition of marriage as it has always been and instead adopt a different term for same sex unions. Are they common? I don't know because frankly I don't discuss it with that many people.

I do suspect more people than will probably admit it have maybe experimented with same sex 'fooling around' or whatever and discovered it wasn't for them. But I don't see that as any big deal either.

I just wish we could all allow people to be who and what they are.

Sure. I just find it odd that Prince was

A. Jehovah Witness with a phobia for people who cuss.
B. Against Same Sex Marriage
C. A conspiracy Theorist
D. An opiate addict
E. Celebate

That's the scuttlebutt alright. But none of that has anything to do with me or mine. To me Prince was an amazing entertainer and a significant talent. And I really cant get too interested in any of the rest of it other than to feel sorry when somebody obviously screws up their life.

Edit: I guess I do resent it when people have such a bully pulpit as being a top entertainer and box office draw or a major sports figure etc. and is a dreadful role model for young people who admire them.

My biggest gripe about Prince is he scrubbed clean his youtube videos on a regular basis. I hope that changes now, but I suspect it will be a while before the heirs quit paying the scrub service fees.
