Actually what more primitive societies did was a form of 'hedonism'. By having more than one sex partner, sharing the partners within the tribe, the men tended to provide for the entire tribe, rather than just their mate. South Pacific Islanders (of 'Mutiny on the Bounty' fame) commonly shared their women as a bonding ritual. So did many other early tribes here in North America. In many earlier societies a man's wealth and social status hinged on the number of wives he could support.
Early societies were more pack like than monogamous relationships. Alpha males getting primacy on mating rights and the using access to females a powerful tool in maintaining loyalty within the tribal unit. Disease spread more through a COMPLETE lack of understanding what disease is and how it is spread- remember until the 18th century washing your hands after taking a dump was not the norm. Dirty clothes spread disease far faster with more deadly results than a dirty dick. So you can't possible expect 'most primitive human societies' to adopt cultural sexual patterns to deal with a concept (disease) they blamed on the GAWDS disfavor...
Monogamy and providing for only one mate and the offspring of that union is a fairly unique trait of a very few 'tribes' (and even they gave the wives of slain men to their brothers) and for most of 'civilizations' and pretty new development...
Nice try at rewrite though....
