Just Show Up

It can be... in what context?

well when I was younger, I devalued "just showing up"

but now as I look upon life occurrences I am beginning to realize there is value in just showing up

sometimes just showing up and keeping one's mouth shut...it's enough

Reasonable thought I'll agree.

Understand that as well was not arguing for "participation awards" or something, just thinking philosophically that in some cases showing up may be enough. Point of view and sentiment sort of thing for lack of a better way to put it.

I really never got it before...I'm not sure it's enough, but it seems to be better than not showing up

I have a friend that shows up to everything, he says almost zero and he never stays long but people seem to think he walks on water for it so I am re-evaluating the benefit for those to whom you show up for

even at funerals, some people seem to count the numbers and I guess somehow it matters

I mean, it wouldn't to me but yeah, I guess it's meaningful to some

Is it enough?

Sometimes. There are many days when I'll just show up for work and do little or nothing until the phone rings or an email comes through which requires me to spring into action. So, by just showing up, I'm there and ready for when that happens.

yeah that's a good point to...once there, things happen

There certainly are times where just showing up is more than enough.

"Just showing up" at a funeral...even just as a pro forma sign of respect for the ones mourning the deceased...is more than enough. It is the giving of comfort in a way.

"Just showing up" at the bedside of a comatose, dying person...the same.

But "just showing up" to a discussion...probably isn't. You've got to contribute...even if it is just by agreeing or disagreeing with something someone else has initiated.

yes the discussion thing needs meaningful input or else things come to a grinding halt

but life things apparently it is I am learning

you don't even have to say anything wise

just show up and behave like a dog, hang close, stay mute, and look neutral :)

us humans really are pack animals

At some funerals, even the body doesn't even show up.

I got a kick out of the fact that so many people, on so many occasions, said to Elizabeth Taylor, "You'll be late to your own funeral"...that she arranged to keep the people at the cemetery waiting for 15 minutes. She had directed the funeral home to do so...and to announce when they arrived with the casket that she wanted to be late even for that.
