My wife and I decided to go Mac after a lifetime of using PC. We're starting out with 1 MacPro laptop and an iMac Desktop. Then we'll most likely get another MacPro laptop in about 10 months. If you have done the same I have a question.

I am concerned about exporting my PC Microsoft Outlook 2010 .PST files (email, contacts, calendar, etc) to the new Mac's Microsoft Outlook 2016, which has a format called "MBOX". I get different stories from Apple Reps about making that migration without problems.

Some Apple folks say there's a couple of programs that help make that transition easier and safer while others say that Mac Outlook itself has the ability to make the necessary import with minimal (if any) loss of emails, contacts, calendar, etc.

Anybody had to go through this type of change? What was your experience? Do you have any advice?

I would not have made the decision you have already made, without knowing in advance exactly how I would port over items of importance you mention.

My advice is to head to the Apple store, or their workshops, to see examples of how they operate and handle things that originated from Microsoft based PCs. Also, their forums are filled with examples of people moving data between systems. Start there.

Google searches on your issue, or a call to Apple or Microsoft customer support should clear this up super quickly. People have to move files from PC to Mac and vice versa all the time.

Import a .pst file from Outlook for Windows

To help you transfer messages and other items from a Windows-based computer to a Macintosh computer, Outlook for Mac can import Outlook Data Files (.pst) that are created in Outlook for Windows.

  1. Transfer the .pst file to your Macintosh computer.
  2. On the Outlook for Mac File menu, click Import.
  3. Click Outlook Data File, and then click the right arrow.
  4. Select Outlook for Windows Data File, and then click the right arrow.
  5. Locate the data file on your computer, and then click Import.
  6. When the import process is complete, click Done.
The imported items appear in the navigation pane under On My Computer.
Note Outlook for Mac can only import Unicode-based .pst files which are the standard format for Personal Folders files for Outlook (for Windows) 2003 and later versions. ANSI-formatted .pst files, also known as Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders Files, were the standard personal folder format for saving data in Outlook for Windows in versions 97-2002. This file format can't be imported into Outlook for Mac. If you have the older version of ANSI-formatted .pst file, there is no automated procedure to convert that file to the newer file format. However, you can create a new Outlook Data File (.pst) in Microsoft Outlook for Windows 2003 or later, and then import items from the older file into the new file. You can then import the new .pst file into Outlook for Mac. For more information about how to create .pst files and importing items, see Help for your version of Outlook for Windows.

pst export import will work fine.

Knowing in advance is a good thing. We did a lot of research and went to Apple after I spoke with an Apple tech support.

We spoke with 4 different people at Apple and got 4 answers. So I thought it would be great to get some info from someone who has transferred data and email. The data part doesn't concern me. BUT converting a .pst into .mbox - is more challenging.

I've read quite a few blogs, etc and I see many more people asking questions like I am than people providing answers that are consistent with a majority.

So I was hoping a member had gone through the conversion and can share do's and don't 's.

Have fun, I hate Apple computers...its like buying a souped up muscle car, but the hood is locked, and you can never ever open it up and play with it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually did the things you suggested and more, but the seems to be similar to contacting the IRS, speaking with 10 people about how to solve a tax problem and getting 10 different answers.

I'd like to help more, but I do not have enough experience to know all those do and do nots. Last time I ended up with a PC to MAC conversion I also ended up in the forums until I found something that worked. Other advice, keep a clean copy of the source PC files to account for a conversion failure or complication.

Thanks. My PC laptop crashed and had to take it to a company to retrieve data to save as much as I did. That was costly.

The wild part is that my laptop crashed "while running my backup drive and it was corrupted at the same time"!

You said you are going from outlook to outlook.

conversion not needed.

RHH,

PC Microsoft Outlook 2010 to Mac Microsoft Outlook 2016 is the only option...according to Apple. And they've somehow made some changes from the last Mac Outlook version.

I think your link is broken.

yes, both use .pst. mbox is for different vendor to different vendor.

I was suggesting you take a look at this for all your backup needs.
