So, last night I'm plugging in the charger on my Xperia Z and it automatically shut off. I was having trouble plugging it in -in the dark -and tried to plug it in with the USB backwards. After it was plugged in, the charging light didn't go on, so I tried to turn the phone on. Dead as a door nail. Unplugged it, tried again, wouldn't even vibrate. Looked on line which offered a hard reset...tried it...nothing.

i ordered a new phone last night. It's coming Monday.

This morning, after leaving the phone unplugged all night, I turned it on, and up it came. Still with 65% power. The refurbished phone is already on its way. I'm thinking of sending it back because of several apps that would be a pain in the neck to reload and set up -- my Lexus Enform being one of them...Dropbox...and the gmail contacts log.

Anyone have something similar happen?

Hmmm... Did you get the refurb for free?

Refurbs are rock-solid, in my experience. Better than new. Believe it or not, refurbs are the only units that get a really thorough check-over before shipment. If new units get a regular physical, refurbs get a military exam.

So if you got it for free, I'd keep it. Your old one could be starting to develop faults. Or perhaps it's a fluke, or just the charger. But either way, what you're about to get is probably as reliable as reliable can be, so it's worth keeping.

If you didn't get it free, then I might rethink sending it back, depending on how the old phone behaves over the next few days.

Sounds like you either shorted out the charger, or just broke the USB from jamming it in the wrong way.

Did you have insurance on the phone?

unfortunately............yes.
I found out the hard way that smart phones are completely water allergic unlike our old phones which could often times be revived with a bag of rice and a vacuum cleaner.

I was carrying a glass of water that had a top on it and a straw in one hand. Had my Blackberry in the other. Carrried everything successfully from the kitchen to the the bedroom. Placed the phone on the night table and bam...the water glass dropped from it's top and spilt water all over the front of my phone. It wasn't tons so I was quite confident that after drying out over night that all would be well. Next morning to my delight it even turned out.

Much to my dismay that was the only fuctioning left in it. I had also bought it on a plan and had purchased it for a reasonable price. Replacement was not reasonable. :(

Now my blue tooth ear piece on the other hand has landed in the cat's bowl and been a floater multiple times. I grab the vacuum, suction it out and throw it into a bag of rice and it has always resurrected.

Somewhat related question, incidentally. I got a 25 gig SD card for my cellphone a while back. Initially, every new app I added on the phone went straight to the SD, which was great, because the phone itself only has like 5 gigs of memory.

At some point, it stopped doing that. Now, I can't add any new apps to the phone because there isn't enough space left on the phone itself.

The SD isn't full. I checked. It's still got a whopping 24 gigs left. I just can't seem to figure out how to get the phone to automatically install new apps to the SD instead of the phone itself.

Anyone know where that setting can be found on an HTC Android phone?

Should be under Settings --> Phone (scroll down, not a new page) --> Storage, I believe?

Great to know SmokeAndMirrors. And, yes, it's a free replacement.

I do have insurance, Gathomas. And I'm wondering, too, if I jammed it up trying to plug it in the wrong way. This morning it charged just fine...very strange.

Sal, I feel your pain. I did the same thing by simply laying my BRAND NEW SMARTPHONE down on the kitchen counter that had a small puddle of water on it. I didn't have insurance. They knew it was water damage because service had me open up the phone, and a yellow dot had turned red. I used my dumb phone for another year as punishment. I figured we belonged together.

When the guy who invented the USB port dies and they are going to slowly lower his casket in to the ground, then pull it back out, turn it 180 degrees and put it back down.

Yeah. That's where I keep looking.

I'm not seeing that specific option though. It just tells me how much storage I have. It doesn't give me the option to favor one over the other.

I guess I'll keep looking.

It actually says that I'm on "Automatic Switching (Currently on SD card)." It just doesn't seem to recognize all the free space on the SD card, as it says I only have 53 MB of space available.

Weird.

yeah that coloured dot thingy is what pooched me too

I no longer have a landline and I am often on a call-in for work so I hauled my arse down the street pronto and paid a small fortune for a replacement. I also purchased insurance...sheesh I hate hard life lessons...I remember just standing there after staring at the cup and putting the top back on to it trying to figure out how it was possible to have carried the cup from the kitchen to the bedroom without having dropped it sooner...whoooo noooooze.... I too was spitting mad at myself I remember that clearly and I remember thinking of all of the cool things I could have bought with that wasted replacement money

I baby my phone much more now...:3oops:

It sure looks like you broke the charging port.

The good news is that they are easy and cheap to replace. For instance you can get them on ebay for $2.99. They take about 15 minutes to replace.

If you couldn't tell; I break mine often while trying to plug in the charger and have first hand experience with changing the charging port. I can do it with my eyes closed now.

If you are concerned with how hard it is to replace the part, there are lots of youtube videos that show the process.

Very helpful. Thank you so much!

It always amazes me what's available on the Internet. Remarkable fountain of information.
