Cuba approves lung cancer vaccine

Country's health officials say drug has increased survival up to 5 months

Quote:
HAVANA - Cuban scientists said on Tuesday the first vaccine to extend lives of lung cancer patients has been approved by Cuban authorities for use and is available in the island's hospitals.

The drug, CimaVax EGF, has been shown to increase survival rates on average four to five months and much longer in some patients, they said in a news conference at Cuba's Center of Molecular Immunology.

In contrast to chemotherapy, the traditional treatment for lung cancer, they said CimaVax EGF has few side effects because it is a modified protein that attacks only cancer cells.

They said it was the first lung cancer vaccine to be approved anywhere in the world, although there are others currently being tested.
Good news for those fearing of lung cancer.

Re: Lung Cancer Vaccine

interesting
not the 'vaccine'
i thought vaccines prevented diseases, not treated them for a short time

Thread Starter Re: Lung Cancer Vaccine

This is obviously in the early stages of development, as with all cures, much progress probably needs to be made to actually find a cure for lung cancer.

At least this vaccine can hold off the cancer cells in the lungs for 5 mths or more. Beats the alternative of chemotherapy which has horrible side effects. (U have to remember, prior to this, there isn't any treatment or vaccine for lung cancer.

Give them time to work on this treatment 1st, they could probably improve the 5 mth timeline. And at least it is moving in the right direction.

btw they call it a vaccine cos it works like one, equipping the immune system to attack the lung cancer cells.

How do vaccines work : How does a Vaccine Work?

Re: Lung Cancer Vaccine

thanks, but it seems your article backs up my POV
Vaccines prevent
they are used before infection
this is being used as a treatment
poor choice of words IMO

but good news none the less, just not what I took it to be

i have a client who beat lung cancer
they cut it out with 1/2 of one lung
seems like a pretty effective treatment so far

That works cos the cancer he had DIDN'T spread to his other lung or other parts of his body, or else his surgery would be pretty useless anyway.

I am still waiting for the Kanzius Machine treatment to actually work : The Kanzius Machine: A Cancer Cure?, Inventor Tells 60 Minutes He Hopes To Live Long Enough To See Machine Cure Humans - CBS News

Would be cool to fry cancer cells with no side effects to the humans and say goodbye to chemotherapy.

(Watch the vid on the link cos it condenses it all down...)

Re: Lung Cancer Vaccine

Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. The vast majority of primary lung cancers are carcinomas of the lung, derived from epithelial cells. Lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and the second most common in women.

Ooooh, up to five months??
Yippee-skippy.
I get to live five extra months with lung cancer!

I wouldn't take it.
How much money did they spend developing this crap?
Why can't they focus on useful things?

Re: Lung Cancer Vaccine

from Cuba? does this mean that we can all start smoking again? with the high tax on cigs, it could be a boon to our tax collectors...
Personally, I think this is about as true as cold fusion....

Cool Re: Lung Cancer Vaccine

Cool, I can see management having less of a fear of making employees clean up the broken asbestos spacers with a shop vac.

Re: Lung Cancer Vaccine

Even if there were a cure for cancer, it would never receive widescale implementation. There have been so many breakthroughs in recent years, but pharmaceutical companies would lose billions. The number one thing preventing cancer from being cured is drug companies.
