A nice little article from Vox which gives a straighforward guide/briefing on CRISPR, a dramatic new technology that allows gene editing to be done much cheaper and faster than ever before.

This will have a significant impact in the near future, for sure, and 2016 seemed to be the year it broke out.

it's a real breakthrough. i worked with lentiCRISPR (v2, i think?) when i was doing research in academia. (around 2015.)

While this could be an incredible tool... I would argue, at least some caution should be considered in its use, we have absolutely no idea what the consequences could be for, especially one of the scenarios it highlights, Non-Malaria carrying mosquitoes, messing with nature in this way could have dire consequences if we do not consider all the possible outcomes of embarking on such an enterprise.

Dont worry. I'm sure with Trump in charge of the NSF there will be lots of environmental impact monies to go around to study this kind of thing!

it's going to be a rough few years for the research community. the sequester was part of why i lost my job when my boss couldn't get a grant renewed. i dug working in publicly funded research, but i'm glad that i'm not as vulnerable to the anti-science whims of elected idiots anymore. now i just have to worry about corporate bean counters.

Never understood your moniker but it all makes sense now. :)

By golly, I got one of them Crisper things right here in my refrigerator. I always knowed this here fridge was special. And timely, too. Got a hole in one of my jeans right now.

I apologize. It's very difficult to change gears from the various Trump lunacy threads to something as fascinating as this is.

This is kinda scary technology. It could be used, for example, to rid the world of LGBT genes.
