The true story of the African-American women at NASA who helped the US win the space race

When Neil Armstrong planted a stars and stripes flag on the moon in 1969, it was a truly patriotic achievement for the United States. But it never would have happened—at least not right then, not in the same way—were it not for the African American women who calculated rocket trajectories as mathematicians and engineers in NASA’s space program....

First, if they were not born in Africa they were not African. Nobody calls white, US-born people, European Americans. I bet 90% of those working at NASA then were European Americans and nobody mentions this as a point of distinction.

Secondly, it would have happened right then and in the same manner because there were thousands of equally qualified people to do the same job.

Third, the ethnicity of these women has no bearing on what they did and I trust they did an outstanding job.

Finally, expressing this kind of amazement is just another form of racism: racism of low expectations.

I read it again looking for some hidden nuance I may have overlooked.

No, it's not. Maybe your expectations are low, but the rest of us have different reasons.
