I would like to remind my friends at Apple that I'm pretty damn certain these headphones would not improve with lightning.

This isn't "courage," Phil Schiller, it's profiteering from the irritation of your users with no discernible improvement in functionality. The wireless tech they showed off today? Could still be done with the damn jack in place. The concern over space? That's just Jony Ive's thin fetishism seeking a scapegoat. The use of lightning? Nearly pointless factionalization. USB-C is going to have the same capability to act as a headphone jack replacement--not that that does much, if anything, positive for the end user, but it's there. There was no need to throw users at a wall of proprietary standards to connect a damn headphone.

Looks to disrupt the headphone market? Honestly I see great potential for that, but really? It's hardly an innovative and/or fancy goal. It will be easily done too. I mean, I barely use headphones with a wire anymore, unless I'm watching a movie on my home theater PC. Who else feel underwhelmed by this announcement? The other good thing is Iphone will now come with 32 GBs.

It is a stupid move. Wireless headphones use bluetooth and there is a big difference between the quality of sound. Not to mention the cost... wireless bluetooth headsets that are worth a damn cost a freaking fortune.

But my biggest problem with this move... I listen to music while my phone charges at my desk.. not possible with the iPhone 7 now, unless you go wireless charging (does not exist with Apple), or wireless headphones.

This is a "fluff" year for the iPhone..well basically it has been for the last few years,.. but next year is the 10th anniversary, and that should be "mind blowing". I would hold off getting the 7, and wait for the 7s or whatever they going to call it next year.

But hey at least they are officially water resistant.. did not think they would do that, since blaming customers for "water damage" was a classic way Apple got people to buy yet another phone.

Funny part of the event.. they spent more time on the Apple Watch than the phone.. which basically shows how out of touch Apple is these days.

No headphone jack?! So glad I switched to Android.

That's the other thing that bothers me. Even if you can say to me, "hey guy, you have a portable headphone amp/dac. You're fine!" You still go, "hey mate, that dac of mine has a limited battery life as well and when it goes I have to either enjoy stupid dongle hell or go without and that's before the phone's battery starts waning!"

No headphone jack?! So glad I switched to Android.

When I was ordering my Oppo PM-3 headphones and the Oppo HA-2 headphone amp/dac (they pair really, really well), I got a first glimpse of the hot mess that was likely going to follow if computer companies had their way with smartphones, tablets, and computers. Keep in mind that getting headphones and a headphone amp or dac connected to a portable music player was a bit complicated in the past, but nowhere near the stupidity today.

So here is this summer's purchase:

The headphones come with two sets of cables: one standard 9 foot cable, the other a shorter but mobile OS capable cable. When ordering the product, you had to choose which mobile OS capable cable you were going to want: iOS or Android. These still used analogue connectors, but they had remote control features that could only work with a specific operating system.

When I sprung for the headphone amp/dac, I received just this treasure chest of ****ing cables, including a lightning-to-USB short cable, a mini-usb-to-mini-usb short cable, and a standard 3. mm to 3.5 mm mini-to mini cable. Then I purchased a custom adapter for my Sony NW-A17 Walkman so it can use the Walkman's proprietary connector to bypass the internal amp and output to mini-usb.

Basic headphone listening is going to get a hell of a lot more complicated, for completely unnecessary reasons other than to suck you into the computer/smartphone company's ecosystem so they can make a killing off of you.

No headphone jack may make water resistance a tad easier but I like my cheaper headphones that don't need a special receiver or their own power supply. When will these "improvements" stop making us buy expensive new stuff that works no better?

I think that's the point of these "improvement"...in fact, I think that's the point of Apple in general. Apple was always more expensive for lower performance stuff, it's a name and people buy the name.

Y'know, a couple weeks ago my wife got me to use a Samsung Galaxy 7 Active, to give up my 'old' iPhone 6. Tomorrow I'm getting my iPhone back because the android phone is MUCH less user-friendly than the iPhone. It's less reliable and much buggier.

And for those who conflate "user-friendly" with "lower performance", I've won awards in the Navy for database programming, and the major reason why was because I was able to make the programs so user-friendly. User-friendliness isn't a sign of "dumbing down", but a sign of superior programming.

That reminds me of this funny vid:

sure there was. they want you to purchase a 120 pair of beats wireless headphones.

PS I love sennheiser I always have. they make some great headsets.
I hate apple with a passion and will never purchase one of their crap products for myself.

my wife likes them but she is wanting the iphone 6s or 6s+ don't know why but she does.

My android generally has higher performing specs, is cheaper, and quite easy to use. Apple finally made theirs water resistant, but the droid has been for some time now. Plus it is rugged, i've dropped my phone multiple times. The only damage it has is a scratch on the screen it got when I wrecked/flipped my car. It took a car wreck to damage. iPhones shatter if you look at it the wrong way or mention Windows in its presence.

Apple...more expensive....lower performing status symbol for hipsters

Yup, pretty much this. They're trying to disguise another shove into the walled garden of expensive proprietary stuff as an "improvement," which in reality is probably a substantial step backwards.

Android's had water resistent phones for ages. I've heard of people literally taking underwater pictures with no case with my phone, and it's not even anything special. Android started doing dual camera ages ago. My HTC One, which is now pushing 4 years old, had stereo.

Nothing new here, except more attempts to lock people into forking over ever-more insane amounts of money on proprietary Apple kit.

And Apple Fanboys will eat it up!

I agree that Apple should have earlier made theirs water resistant and less likely to damage, but those are matters of the physical engineering, not of the programming. What's more, anyone with experience will tell you that "higher specs" doesn't automatically translate to "more capable", much less "better". I do wish that Apple would have kept up with the camera technologies, but that's my only real gripe.

And FYI, iPhones are not as fragile as you seem to think - I've cracked a few over the years, but I'm also hard on almost anything I handle (the five bicycles I wrecked are why my wife won't let me get another bicycle).

One more thing - when it comes to Apple products, it's not just the iPhone, but the entire support infrastructure that surrounds it, the iCloud, the ease with which to reset the phone and download all purchased products on the phone or a new phone without having to resort to SIMM chips...

...don't get me wrong - I'm no fan of Apple computers. My wife has one because it's easier for her to use, but I'm typing right now on an ASUS gaming laptop (yeah, I'm a gamer - and gamers generally don't use Apple for their primary PC's). I can dig into the guts of this PC's OS, but it's almost impossible to do so on an Apple.

And one last thing - last week the news came out about updating iPhones because of a security risk. Why was that news? Because it was Apple iPhones that were affected...and that's a very rare thing when it comes to malware. The overwhelming majority of malware affects android phones, because Apple is so careful about what to allow in their OS and in their app store.

The ease of use and reliability of the iPhone - and the comprehensive system of support that surrounds it and protects it - makes it a superior product. Comparing an iPhone with a top-of-the-line Android phone is like comparing a Mercedes E350 and a Corvette - the Corvette will have substantially higher specs and is truly cool...but the Mercedes is what spoils you for all other cars.

Just hooking up my DT 770s to a phone was a pain because the cord is too long. Plus they look really silly if you go outside wearing them. So now I just use those as a Home Theater Surround Sound headphones. With as little space as my Iphone (got it free from/for work) has I only use it for spottily/pandora. No high audio quality stuff. Wireless headphones are good enough for that.

Notice I said headPHONES. Not EARBUDS. I will never be able to own a pair of earbuds (which is what apple is selling here) due to my tiny and lopsided ears. It's a nightmare.

Sorry I hate the Android interface the most. I really loved the Windows Phones interfaces it was slick and easy. Not much going on at all, but that ultimately lead to Windows Phone downfall. Just like the Pocket PC. I'm not an apple fanboy by any means. It just has the most going for it at this current end of the smartphone's life. Needless to say, I haven't been impressed with anything to come out of the smartphone market for years. Including Pokemon Go.

All the OS's are due for major upgrades.

Here we have Apple trying to reinvent the wheel. A phone, which has become an everyday media device doesn't have an earphone jack? Because Apple wants to change the rules?

Hell with them, I hope they get their asses handed to them. They won't, the Apples fans will buy a turd if it has the Apple logo on it. But I can hope.

I'm not an apple fan, more proprietary crap that you have to buy from...Apple.

Apple hardware is like having an overly expensive muscle car, that has the hood locked because you can never ever tweak it, or put parts on it from other manufacturers.

No thanks, I'll stay Android and Windows, I can actually add memory to them.

Sometime this week, my Samsung tablet will finally get marshmallow

You still go, "hey mate, that dac of mine has a limited battery life as well and when it goes I have to either enjoy stupid dongle hell or go without and that's before the phone's battery starts waning!"

The biggest problem with wireless earbuds... battery life. Apple claims 5 hours.. yes 5 hours on their wireless earbuds. Is that a lot? Well I looked it up. The Apple Wireless Earbuds cost 159 dollars. You can get several bluetooth wireless earbuds that go 7+ hours at a much lower price.

But it is a problem.. What Apple fanboys have to do now when they come home.. plug their iPhone in the wall socket, put their Apple Watch on its charger and now their AirBuds in their charging case.. Seriously?

I agree that Apple should have earlier made theirs water resistant

The iPhone 6S and 6S+ are unofficial water resistant.. dunno why Apple did not make it official last year.

And FYI, iPhones are not as fragile as you seem to think - I've cracked a few over the years, but I'm also hard on almost anything I handle (the five bicycles I wrecked are why my wife won't let me get another bicycle).

Well yes and no. iPhones got a bad rep because of the glass back they once had, and what Samsung has now on its 7... and yes people are talking about how easy it is to crack the Galaxy 7 screen. Problem is with both.. it is design. If we look at the iPhone the design is the problem. When you drop a phone the weakest link breaks first.. it is logical engineering. Now on the iPhone because it is in a metal frame and back, the first thing that breaks is... the screen. Now Apple fanboys have long made fun of the "plastic phones" that Samsung and others pushed out, but the thing is.. they dont break nearly as easily, because if you drop it, then they plastic breaks apart first. I have dropped my "plastic" phones many times, and the weak link.. the back, always poped off first and "softened" the damage.

One more thing - when it comes to Apple products, it's not just the iPhone, but the entire support infrastructure that surrounds it, the iCloud, the ease with which to reset the phone and download all purchased products on the phone or a new phone without having to resort to SIMM chips...

Okay here you have been eating the Apple juice a tad too much. Support.. yes you have the Apple store, but they are hardly as "friendly" as their reputation gives them. They are trained to spot certain issues that can make Apple money, and void the warranty. Case in point. A couple of years ago there was a major fault with MacBooks graphics cards. Apple denied there was a problem for years and used excuses like "water damage" to void the warranty... it happened to me. Then when a class action lawsuit was threatened, then suddenly the tune changed, but that was several years after the MacBook version had gone out of production...

And then there is the iCloud.. the absolute worst piece of **** out there. DO NOT TRUST IT. My cousin just switched her company iPhone 6s to her personal 6s. Now she was worried that her stuff would not transfer. I said, dont worry, we can check if your iCloud has backed up your contacts and other stuff.. no you could not. I went on the webpage and the contacts was blank! Not even her notes were there.. yes iCloud sync was on. So we had to go to alternatives to make sure we had her contacts.. download them to file.. not easy on an iPhone! So we used Gmail to make sure that her contacts were somewhere..that worked perfectly. So we switch sims, fought with the iPhone setup and password bull**** (it is beyond annoying) and we were pleased that the contacts did transfer from the iCloud. My point is.. in all other systems you can see what you have on your cloud account.. not with iCloud it seems.

and moving from phone to phone on Android is far more simple than in the Apple universe. Add Gmail account.. bam done. Takes no time. Not so on Apple.. the amount of legal bull****, fighting with Apple authentication servers and all the problems involved with the iCloud crap.. just not worth the hassle. For one.. can you set up your iPhone without a sim? NOOOOOOOPE! You can with Android.

Actually not exactly true. The reason that it came out was so Apple could cover its legal butt.. The flaw had existed in iOS for many years and was used to spy on Apple users.. in fact I would not be surprised if that flaw was used to hack US government iPhones. What it puts in question yet again is their internal code checking. Remember last year, we learned that SSL on iOS devices had been deactivated for years.. As for malware, one could argue most of Apples own programs are malware :) cause they suck so much! :), but malware on Android is miss-represented. Where does it happen 99% of the time.. China. Why? Because most Chinese Android phones use local Chinese non approved app stores.

I do enjoy getting metaphorically smacked around by those who know more about something that I do! I really do - that's how I learn.

That said, I've had no issues at all transferring data between iPhones or downloading data between devices on the iCloud. It's so doggone simple. When I broke my iPhone, I had no legal issues - a new one arrived on my doorstep in two days. And after comparing the apps between the iPhone and the Android I'm using now, the iPhone's are much superior - particularly when it comes to the podcasts. The apps available on the "Galaxy apps" tab are quite limited - far fewer than I see on the iPhone. I know that there's a lot more android apps out there, but for some reason this Galaxy allows me to search through only a small fraction of them.

It's as I told my wife - the iPhone was made for user-friendliness, as is her Mac...whereas the androids seem to be made for those who like to dig into things like I do on my PC. I much prefer my PC for computing...but for all the things that a modern smartphone does, I prefer the iPhone.

Not meant as that, my apologies :)

Nore have I per say... but I am a nerd and I like know that stuff works before I do anything. With Google and Android, I can go to the Gmail account in question and check if the contacts are there or not. I can check if the documents are on the Google Drive and I can view all my pictures on my Google Photos.. I cant do all this on iOS, at least not easily.. especially if you dont have a Mac. There is a webpage for iCloud that does not work it seems, and last I looked no photo viewing there.... there is a program for Windows.. wait what? I have to install a program to access a cloud service?!?!? What is this.. the 1990s?

When I broke my iPhone, I had no legal issues - a new one arrived on my doorstep in two days.

Legal issues, I mean all the "terms and conditions" clicking, adding passwords that I dont want and all that crap. On Google it is more simple.. start, set country/language, get on Wifi, login on Gmail account, accept conditions, and you are done basically. Think you click like 3 or 4 different terms and conditions when setting up an iPhone.. Hell you cant even set up the iPhone without having a sim card in..

That is because you looking in the wrong place. Galaxy Apps is Samsungs own store, skip that.. it is only useful for some freebies that Samsung are paying for.... like 3 months or so of Deezer (recommended.. free music for 3 months!)

The Android store is the Play Store. There you will find far more apps than on iOS, and yes stuff for pod casts. In fact Googles own apps have a pod cast app now I believe (dont use pod casts myself).

It's as I told my wife - the iPhone was made for user-friendliness, as is her Mac...whereas the androids seem to be made for those who like to dig into things like I do on my PC. I much prefer my PC for computing...but for all the things that a modern smartphone does, I prefer the iPhone.

And I would disagree. I am a techie, and the iPhone is the most difficult one to use. The best by far is Windows Phone.. so damn simple, but that is all but dead now sadly.. yes it was Microsoft, but they actually made a very easy to use UI.. go figure. After that comes Android vanilla, as in pure Android from Google. Only on Nexus devices. Then comes Android from LG and others, more and more makers are putting on a near pure version of Android and only adding certain stuff of their own.. Then Android from Samsung (Touch Wiz sux still)., and then the iPhone. Now let me explain why.

On the iPhone there is so much that is not logical. No back key is really annoying and the implementation of the back key in apps is all over the place.. reallly annoying, especially when they place it in the top left hand corner.. not a natural place. Settings is way worse than Samsungs complicated crap, and that is saying a lot.. because you cant really do much on an iPhone vs a Samsung phone.. and it is especially bad when Apple translates to other languages.. finding storage on an iPhone that is not in English can be.. interesting, as the translation is not always correct. The fact that settings for apps is not in the app it self, but in the settings menu.. is just counter intuitive. I am not saying that Andorid is perfect, because it is not.. nore is Windows Phone. But they are a hell of a lot easier to find things and it is far more logical. I remember in one iOS version (not sure it is still in), there was 2 places to mute the sound, and none were connected.... which caused all sorts of problems for my elderly clients, who some how managed to activate mute.

Eh. I already have the 6s+ w/128 GB.

I can't see ever needing an upgrade for anything.
