Ford's turbo truck engine gets power boost for 2017

I heard once that Ford sells a truck every 40 seconds and thats just in the US

I recently looked at the 2016's and wow. Wow thats a nice truck and wow they're expensive as hell and wow the the dealer was offering up no incentives.

Sticker price, take it or leave it.

You are going to pay through the nose for the mpg fleet requires on cars.
They are becoming unaffordable for typical people.

There is no reason a truck should run 40-50k.

If it has all the bells and whistles and cargo capacity and towing capacity to boot then yes you will be paying 50,000 for a truck. Basically you are buying a luxury version of a commercial vehicle that will get easily 500,000 miles on the drivetrain with basic maintenance. You can get the pure commercial versions for significantly less. If you need that kind of brute and you intend to work it I would go that way. You can get a half ton pick up that is IMO more useful with similar bells and whistles for quite a bit less around 30,000 and it will last about as long especially if you go diesel. The 50,000 pickup is for those farmers ranchers and oilmen with money to spend. I would get a 1/2 ton quad cab pickup with a diesel motor. They are a bit smaller have superior efficiency and are cheaper and can do pretty much everything a typical owner would need to do. I really like the Ram 1500 diesel version myself.

FACT: standard trannys and V8s are on the way out. Check it out if you doubt. We now have twin turbo inline four cylinders motors and 8 and 10 speed auto trannys. The V8 will be available in crate series but in the not too distant future they will not serve any purpose as the HP and torque in the smaller packages is a match.

Good post. You probably read C and D.
As an aside it took me many years of reading rags before I came close to understanding how these new tranies work. You would think only super cars had paddle shifters but today everyone has them. My Truck even has an M selection were I can manually change gears by clicking a button on the end of the selector. Bing Bing Bing.. instant shifts. The ford GT with 600HP does not offer a manual transmission. Neither does the Ferrari who came in second.

It aint the good old days no mo
It's better.

I have a 2015 F150 with the 2.8 V6 EcoBoost. It reaches maximum 375 f/p of torque at only 2500 RPM. That is sooo much more torque than a V8 at that RPM. If I did not have 4wd it would smoke the tires for 100 yards. Put it in 4x4 sport and it will give you whip lash and beat any truck you can name to 60mph (if they don't have 4x4).

If you have not been paying attention the 3.5 Ecoboost V6 just challenged the 50th anniversary of LeMans kick butt of Ferrari. 50 years ago when the Ford GT took 1, 2, and 3 at LeMans . This year they went 1,3,4 with Ferrari taking 2.

The Ford Raptor is expected to be making 450HP next year from a 3.5 liter V6

I have the same truck (I'm assuming you have the "Sport"). Do you use the E85 fuel?

I have the XL super cab plane jane. I use the cheapest gas I can find. Not sure they have Egas out here in Utah but the lowest octane does change around the state depending on altitude.
The "sport" I was referring to was the shifting selector, normal, tow, sport.

BTW is you have not tried it yet put it 4x4, change shifting to sport, press on the brake and the accelerator at the same time until RPM hits 2200, then let her rip. Best if you do not do that too often :)

My neighbor just paid 69k for the biggest pickup ford makes with every goody you can imagine added on.
I got my lowest end F150 for $30k late last year. Plenty of incentives applied. List was around $40k. Even got $1000 off if I used Ford Finance which I did for one month then paid it off.

still 30k is a good bit of money. I have to start looking for a van next year ugg. I hate shopping for cars.

I looked at an ecoboost vs normal, but you lose half your towing capacity for very little gain in MPG. For me personally, the f150 was also too big. And too expensive. I have settled on a Subaru Forester instead, since i dont NEED the payload of a truck. Well equipped for 23k, highest brand and resell ratings.

You have the specs wrong. Towing capacity is more with ecoboost not less.

This brochure gives an idea of how straightforward pickups still were fifty years ago. The V-8's and power features and air conditioning had come in, and so had camper shells, but the standard item was still very simple and inexpensive. It was not uncommon for even medium-duty trucks, let alone pickups, to have inline sixes.

1966 Dodge Pickups Brochure

Go to page 7 of that brochure and make the truck a Power Wagon and you have the set-up I learn to drive on the roads in. Dad took me out in February (snow covered roads) with that rig (camper and all) and taught me to drive on roads. They even got the color of the truck right (discretely wipes away a tear)....

Edit: Or go to page 6 (bottom right) and you'll see a green version of the "Old Red Dodge".

Edit again: It just gets better. Page 9, top right, the Industrial (wide block) 318. One of the toughest engines ever built.

Gas engine? ptttttttttttth! A real truck has a diesel engine. Lots of hp, lots of torque, and lots of testosterone.

Okay, so I didn't actually pick it out. It is my wife's truck. She went shopping for something that was not a "chick truck", she wanted something a guy would drive. Yes, it is big, needs a step ladder to get into, its noisy, can pull a house, and cost over $50k. And actually, the only reason she picked a diesel, is because she liked the sound it makes. She says it sounds like a truck should.

Now for the part that will make other truck owners cry. Despite the 4x4 drivetrain, the only off-road it has seen is a driveway. She doesn't drive it in bad weather so it doesn't get dirty. Despite its 1-ton suspension, and its 20K pound pulling power, the most it has seen in the bed is bags of groceries. I guess I should mention it is a Ram 3500.

I keep telling myself, "its her money, its her truck". But it is still sad.

It's actually called E85, not Egas, and it's ethanol and it's much cheaper than unleaded, although you go through it a little quicker. You would know if you can use it if your gas cap has a yellow ring that says E85 right on it. And thanks for the tip!

Your writing about the automated manual transmissions. I have one in my Kenworth T660. A 13speed heavy duty Eaton Ultrashift. I will never buy another manual truck transmission, I like it that much. I still prefer the manual in my Triumph Spitfire simply because its such a very smooth fast shifting transmission and its a ragtop that I like to throw around.

I have driven the automated manuals in automobiles the really nice ones are the dual clutch ones that have very fast smooth shifts. I have driven a hybrid transmission that is a combination of manual and automatic that can shift under power and that is in my opinion the best of both worlds.

Mercedes and Freightliner make very nice vans. You might want to look at them.

Can't afford either.
Wife is looking at the new Pacifica from Chrysler.

I'll reserve judgement until there's information about where all that new power is delivered in the RPM range and how smooth the turbo is for things like towing/hauling.
