Windows 10, the verdict

It depends...on your system...your internet speed (you have to download some gigabytes of OS)...whether you use the Windows Update method (can hang up on you) or the iso method...whether you do a fresh install or want to keep the files and programs already on your system. And whether you run into problems (always a possibility, but problems can be dealt with)

In my opinion, it's best to have another way to access the internet on hand before you start so you can find solutions if you run into problems. You may run into driver issues and need to download fixes or you may run into problems that you'll need to investigate to find solution.

Bottom line...it could take from a couple hours or less...to a day or so, though if your upgrade appears to hang up on you...say, an hour goes by and nothing seems to be happening...it's best to abort and find a different way.
I have a laptop and a desk top to do, but would do only one at a time precisely for this reason.

Got a bad virus a few years ago and having the 2nd internet access was invaluable.

Only recently; since this referenced posting.

Start up is about the same for me - though I use only SSD's.

And game performance is ever-so-slightly worse.

I believe you are correct (I have heard similar) but so far it's doing me little/no good.

Interesting on the bold and underlined.. that is not what most experience.. quite the opposite. Windows 10 has a far better memory management system and a lower footprint than Windows 7.

How long does the upgrade usually take?

I'm thinking of sucking it up and taking the plunge.

Depends on the machine. My own i5 2500k 8 GB ram machine takes about 10 minutes or so on an SSD. My Sony Viao ultrabook takes under 10 minutes.. way under. But it has a fast SSD. I have had one Windows 10 install take an hour +, but that was on a 14 year old laptop.

I suggest you get a 4 GB USB stick (minimum) and go to

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

And download the upgrade tool. Run it, and make a Windows 10 USB. This way you dont have to download the OS every time if you have multiple computers or if you after the upgrade want to make a clean install. Or if you have your Windows 7 key, then you can make a clean install from the start, by using said key when it asks for a key.

A tip.. if you have a 8 GB stick, then you can download a 32 and 64 bit version of Windows 10 on the stick.. can be handy.

Actually, I have heard the opposite.

In the games I play, the game play is ever-so-slightly slower with certain graphics. It is not a big deal, but it is noticeable. Granted, I have not run any hard core games yet.

Start up/shut down times are quicker...but I could care less about that.

But so far, I am seeing ZERO benefit (of significance) to 10 over 7..and several downsides.

If this upgrade were not free and I knew what I know...there is NO WAY I would pay to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7.

But again, early days yet.

BTW - my computer is an i7 3770k, 16GB RAM and SSD's only.

What game is it?

I know from experience that most of my games, from Everquest to WoW, to Diablo 3 and Star Wars the Old Republic, and things like Stellaris and Civilization run the same or better on Windows 10. Especially Everquest got a nice boost with Windows 10.

And Stfu with your modern(ish) computer hardware!! :)

Just old games.

Lol...my specs are pretty good but my video card is not as good because I wanted a silent/fanless PC (long story) and most cards make noise.

Most new cards dont, even with a fan. Saw a review of the new RX480 and damn it was silent.

Old games hmm..

You don't understand. I did not want pretty quiet when I built my PC...I wanted absolute, DEAD silence....no fans of ANY kind.

Even the quietest fan makes noise.

Other then a few seconds on start up and if I run a DVD/CD-ROM (which I almost never do), my computer is TOTALLY silent. My iPad/iPhone make the same amount of noise (except for a couple seconds on start up).

The downside is cost and it is BIG because everything has all these fins for cooling...looks like an air-cooled, lawnmower engine inside.

Oh, and I should have asked this, too... Both my computers are Win 7 Professional, 64-bit. I will still get Pro/64, right? I presume I will, but want to verify.

Yes...you will.

If you go the Windows Upgrade route, it'll send you Win10 Pro/64. If you go the other route...the one PeteEU recommended and the one I recommend also...you have to make sure you download the correct one.

Yes you will get the 64 bit version installed. If you want the 32 bit version, then you need to do a full clean install, but it can be done.

Just so people dont freak out, but Microsoft has released a full screen "Please update to Windows 10" wave across the world. Remember the free upgrade runs out in under 1 month.

I tell you one thing...the video player default on Windows 10 sucks, IMO.

I think Windows is trying too hard to re-invent the wheel here.

I like the apps and the overall look is interesting.

Sure speed is a bit better...big deal. So it turns of in 5 seconds instead of 15...whoopie!!!

No way Windows 10 is worth the $120 it costs (once the free exchange runs out) over Windows 7, IMO. NO WAY.

Over Windows 8? No idea.

Would you really use the Windows 10 default programs? I wouldn't...and don't.

However, a default windows app has pretty much no connection to the quality of the OS. That's like saying that the Samsung bloatware in their Android phones means the hardware or the OS is crap. Pretty idiotic, if you ask me.

But one important point to keep in mind is...if you don't upgrade before the free period ends...in 24 days, now...then eventually you WILL be spending some ridiculous amount of money for something you could be getting at no cost. Everyone has to make their own decision about that.

What's pretty idiotic is calling/inferring someone is idiotic when you did not even understand what they said/typed.

I did not say I used the video default player...I just said it sucks. Plus, I did not say that because it sucks that the whole OS sucks.

Do you have a comprehension problem? Or do you just read something part way through and make snap judgements? Both questions are rhetorical because I don't really care what your answer(s) is(are).

Try understanding what it is you are commenting about before you comment and you will make less errors.

We are done here...bu bye.

BTW, the old Windows Media Player does an excellent job.

Microsoft is being deliberate here. They learned their lesson with IE and market monopolization. They removed an email program in Vista and Windows 7 for example, but brought it back in a highly limited version in 8 and now 10.

I think Windows is trying too hard to re-invent the wheel here.

No operating system is worth 120 dollars.

As for Windows trying to reinvent it self.. yes and no. Most of the changes are visual, not functional and of course behind the scenes.

Hehe.. WMP sux! Seriously bad bloated POS... of course not as bad as iTunes, but still. VLC all the way, simple interface and plays pretty much everything.

And standard apps tend to be crap regardless of the OS. Most standard apps on the Mac or iOS are horrible imo.

So, you are saying that they deliberately created a video player that was sub par? I don't understand. To what end?

I don't like VLC. And all the others I have used just do not work as well for what I need as good ole Windows Media Player.

The one they include with Windows 10 is junk.

No, they created a video player that is basic and not too advanced while still trying to make it stylish. Why? Not to get sued again for cornering the market.

Well, I have no idea what you are referring to, but alright.

But their new video player is not too basic for me. It is too lousy for me. It does not even do basic things very well.

I just want a basic one - and it sucks at doing even that, IMO.

Have you forgotten that Microsoft was sued by the EU on Internet Explorer? And lost? That fundamentally changed how Microsoft did Windows.

Outlook Express was the standard email program in Windows XP. In Vista it was removed and became a voluntary download called Windows Live Mail. By Windows 8, it had returned in a metro version but a very limited version. Same with Windows 10. It is hardly a full blown email program. Granted the "email program" is all but dead now days thanks to web based mail.

Point is, Microsoft does not bundle programs now days that are competitive with 3rd party alternatives. As soon as there is a threat that the program gets "too popular" then it gets nerfed or removed to prevent it becoming dominating.

My two favorite versions of Windows were XP and 7. XP provided the best network control of any of them and was stable. 7 was also pretty stable. There is no doubt in my mind that 10 is superior to 8 which was failure and got a VP fired. I have half a dozen computers on a network. The network is stable but not very controlable. I replaced my Win 8 notebook last year with a Win 10 model and, since it doesn't have a touch screen, none of the metro stuff is available at all. It works just like Win 7. My only complaint is that it is difficult or impossible to remove some of the apps, none of which I use.

Stable? heheheh

Far more stable than XP.. by a million miles.

What do you want to control? Just curious

Well some apps cant be removed yes, but most can.
