In your opinion, humble as it may be, is Pluto a planet?

In light of stuff like this: Ninth planet may have been discovered, researchers say - CNN.com

I keep thinking that title should read "tenth".

No. Pluto has not cleared out the debris in the area of its orbit. Hence, not a planet.

Planets have to have cleared their path such that they are not sharing their orbit with other rocks of significant size. Pluto, however, may one day become a planet, since it will eventually clear the orbit of said debris. But, it's not there yet.

IMO once you be a planet, you can never go black. ;)

For my entire educational life I was taught there were 9 planets. Pluto being the ninth.

Most of that was before they discovered that Pluto had it's own moons. You got moons, you're a planet.

I'm gonna stick with calling it a planet. I can be stubborn that way.

Lol. It is a dwarf planet as far as I am concerned. I was told that in my 2 basic astronomy classes I had to take in college. One of my professors worked with Carl Sagan actually. That was pretty cool.

Maybe we should. Science is ever changing it's mind.

If Pluto is a planet, then so are Vesta, and Ceres.

And Sedna and Makemake and Haumea and Quaoar, and Eris.

That is the point of science. To theorize, to explore, to engage in process all as a means to finding new answers to these sort of questions.

Beats the hell out of looking up at the sky at mythological characters while holding text written 1000s of years ago claiming to have all the answers.

I fully agree with the continuing search for the truths of the universe. God answers the questions that science can't.[for those who wish to know]

Pluto is lord of hell, and will have his revenge on us.
