Obama Administration Unveils $4B Plan to Jump-Start Self-Driving Cars

I won't be satisfied with self-driving cars until they can negotiate snow-packed mountain roads in Colorado as well as I can.

Heck, I'm not confident they can handle the idiot traffic on I-25...during rush hour in the Springs or Denver...in a snow storm, though I expect they'll get there someday.

In any case, I don't think the government needs to spend $4B in taxpayer money as Obama proposes. Heck, Google and other companies are doing just fine without the government's help.

Self driving cars have the potential to change everything- the impact could be as significant as the smartphone.

Car ownership in cities could drop to a fraction of what it is, driving and commuting times will plummet, the land devoted to parking will be severely cut, and the energy savings overall will be huge.

Add in tens of thousands of deaths and lives saved per year too, not to mention billions saved in property damage.
Curious to why you think car ownership will drop if cats can drive themselves. Not saying your wrong just wondering your reasoning behind it.

Because you will have basically a cheap uber system- especially in cities- with a car on-call 24/7. Why buy when you can rent a dirt cheap driverless car that you don't have to park?

Right now, most cars are idle 90% of the time. An efficient system will have a car active 90% of the time.
