Another point in my distaste for anything Apple.

Seems like it's the way of such technology. Yes, Apple seems to be a bit quick on the draw and clearly more motivated to pressure for profit rather than just allow for people to adapt more gradually, but pretty much all technology ultimately forces you to upgrade, hardware and software.

I believe this may be in deference to the widespread acceptance of Bluetooth.

We've been using Bluetooth streaming from cell phones & iPads to audio playback devices for awhile, now. Just got back from the Tmobile store after buying a new phone on Black Friday, and and they're really pushing portable Bluetooth speaker systems - half off!

It's fast becoming a wireless world!

When I got my iPad, I was shocked to find it wouldn't see my wireless Hp printer. What nonsense. Just yesterday, I broke down and bought another Hp that works with it. Apple should be ashamed.

i'll be glad to see the cord go eventually, as the headphones inevitably get jerked out of my ears. however, i'm not a huge fan of Apple getting rid of legacy ports. it would be nice to have a DVD drive, because yeah, DVDs are still a thing. what they've done with switching the MacBook Air to one USB3 port for everything was also too early, IMO.

as for Apple in general, though, yeah, the products are better. my flash drive MacBook Pro is great. everything works, and it boots up almost instantly. the iPod i got as a gift in 2009 is also still chugging along even after being left in a car in all kinds of conditions. the battery is still good, too.

There is nothing good for the consumer in this move. The jack doesn't take up any user space and the only reason for them to remove it is to lock users into their proprietary and overpriced hardware. This is old Steve Jobs 101.

Buying something from Apple is like buying a muscle car, but the hood is locked, and you can never ever tweak it.

I hate Apple products. I'd rather build and tweak my own computer.

I hate wires myself. They are very hard to keep neat and organized and always seem to get

The cord will not go, there is no way my headphones could ever go cordless, they have 50mm drivers, also earphones. The one USB port will never work, ever, period. It is one one the worse tech design decisions in history.

That's my issue. And maybe I'm the rare individual, but I hate feeling like I'm being blocked in. I resent it.

And the thing about the phone being thinner is, to me, just bragging rights at this point.

I will concede, though, that their products are generally good quality. It's their mindset that turns me off.

You build and tweak your own phones?

eventually, there won't be a jack, and it will all be bluetooth. however, that's not the case right now, and it's a little early to get rid of the jack, IMO.

I very much doubt that, have you ever had proper good quality headphones, they need to be wired in order to draw enough power to drive them and secondly they are already bulky enough, they do not need a battery and receiver.

Don't cut yourself man, being so edgy and all.

You are the one trying to set stupid arbitrary rules that are meaningless.

And, I'm more edgy than you.

i'm saying that at some point, there will premium headphone technology that doesn't need a wire. we're not there yet, though, at least not in the cheaper headphone market. it's too early to get rid of the headphone jack.

I agree Helix. Had my first iPhone for years and it was tough little device. Still worked fine even when I finally went to the iPhone 5. Smart phones are what they are because of Apple.

yeah, pretty much. i dig my Samsung, but much of it is because of the iPhone. as for laptops, Apple wins.

Actually the connector is much larger than it needs to be. If i were to guess, Apple is likely to save costs in the long run with a redesign as well as sell more as people need the special connector.

This is typical Apple but lets see if it is true. The thing is, the iPad Air 2 is thinner than the iPhone 6, and it has a phone jack. So maybe this story is another dud.

Bluetooth headsets are still very expensive. An official iPhone bluetooth headset is gonna be silly expensive and if it is going by the standard Apple earplugs.. utterly crap.

Also bluetooth headsets need recharging.... a big problem if they last less than the smartphone they are connected too.

I've been using the Sony SBH-50 for about and love it. Wear it under my polo shirt (normal workday and weekend attire). Clips to the V-neck, push button to answer phone and can stream audio anytime I want. Very minimalist and with the headphones inside my shirt their no dangling wires.

Love'em.
