The tardigrade genome has been sequenced, and it has the most foreign DNA of any animal - ScienceAlert

Scientists have sequenced the entire genome of the tardigrade, AKA the water bear, for the first time. And it turns out that this weird little creature has the most foreign genes of any animal studied so far – or to put it another way, roughly one-sixth of the tardigrade's genome was stolen from other species. We have to admit, we're kinda not surprised. A little background here for those who aren’t familiar with the strangeness that is the tardigrade – the microscopic water creature grows to just over 1 mm on average, and is the only animal that can survive in the harsh environment of space. It can also withstand temperatures from just above absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water, can cope with ridiculous amounts of pressure and radiation, and can live for more than 10 years without food or water. Basically, it's nearly impossible to kill, and now scientists have shown that its DNA is just as bizarre as it is.

Could have come to earth on a meteor give its ability to survive.

I had a professor in college who was an expert on tardigrades. He had one species of the little bugs named after him (Hexapodibius beasleyi). I think he's probably an alien from outer space, too. (Just kidding, Professor.)

It just goes to show that no matter where in the universe life starts it's going to be cellular organisms, and for multicellular mobile organisms it's going to be bilateral symmetry, and they will end up looking pretty much like what we have here. So the idea that intelligent aliens would look kind of like humans isn't that far out.

Or it's general near indestructibility, including tolerance of heavy radiation, includes a high tolerance for horizontal genetic transfer. Indeed, tolerance of high levels of genetic alteration is a prerequisite for tolerance of heavy radiation.

To say it is near indestructible because of its high level of horizontally transferred DNA, rather than the other way around, only evinces one's own presumptions.

That's called ignoring the scientific studies done.

Go take your idiotic one liners to someone who can be bothered to bring themselves down to your level to debate.

You really love to ignore the scientific in favor of the religious lies.

As I said, take your retarded sloganeering elsewhere. If anyone wants to have an actual discussion about this, I'm happy to have one. But I won't be bothered to come up with an intellectual response to a comment that could have been posted by a two year old.

You can't have an actual discussion since you don't understand science and ignore in favor of your dogma.

You only want discussion if it agrees with you. You lack tolerance which is typical of a religious dogma adherent.

The funny thing is you accuse others of the exact thing you do, such as personal insults.

It's a shame as you seem otherwise intelligent.

Moderator's Warning:
Stick to discussing the topic, which is not religion or other posters. If more moderation is required, this thread will have fewer participants.

I'm actually fine with discussing this, provided it's an actual discussion of the issue, not simply "lol you don't accept science".

Do you have anything to say about my first post?
