That's a bit of an oversimplification.

They're looking for "mini black holes." If they find them, this may be evidence in favor of some type of string theory, which may imply a multiverse model. It's not clear that the LHC has enough energy to discover mini black holes; or, string theory may be wrong.

It's not like they are planning to send an email to a universe where Marty McFly is a real person. ;)

Detection of mini black holes at the LHC could indicate parallel universes in extra dimensions

What can I say about this if it succeeds, except "holy crap!"

I'd be careful about reference the Express, but I'm eager to see what they find. I have to say that I suspect that the Many Worlds Interpretation is right at least to some extent, but of course that's not something that we can really test...yet.

On a related subject - just so you'll hear it here first - we so far don't know what dark matter is, even though it appears to make up the majority of the matter in the universe. I suspect - based on the fact that with all our scientific wherewithal, we still can't tell what the heck it is - that the gravitational anomalies that are considered "proof" of dark matter are instead due to a proximity - if we can call it that - of (what we might call) a parallel universe to those anomalies, that the proximity itself is affecting the gravity in those areas.

Yes, that's a really out-there prediction, and I'm sure I'm wrong (any real scientist reading it would just shake his head in disgust), but it would be really interesting if I turned out to be right.

Isn't that what happened in "Poltergeist"?

Be care messing around with something that's just a hypothesis.

Poltergeist was just a movie.

Confirming the existence of parallel universes would drastically change our view of the world.

For the sake of the rest of us, they should send a drone in to check it out.

Now, there's an idea. Send in a drone to take pictures. If they see a poltergeist, they can just shut the door and lock it.

Oh hell no. If the drone sees a poltergeist, it should bomb the damn thing. That's what we already do in the Middle East to terrorists. And what's more terrifying than a poltergeist?

Visbek accurately summarizes the issue with this presentation of it.

:lamo

That's not science, it's philosophy. And very stupid philosophy at that.

You make sure you tell all the physicists who agree about its likelihood to, y'hear?

Ok, I'll also laugh at them if they advance retarded botanical theories.

The experiment is going to happen. There is nothing you can do to stop it.

Well, nothing rational anyway.

All I'm trying to say is that maybe this is not a good idea and we may not be ready for what we find.

And it may lead to UFO cover up stuff as well if they find something strange that they will not release to the public.

Which is why they must open the door and find out. Were humans not curious, we'd still be living in caves.

I played Doom throughout college, so I can personally attest that opening doors into parallel universes is a super bad idea.

Don't forget the old TV show Sliders.

Bipeds crunching numbers! Bipeds using computer panels!

That's a different "parallel universe" theory than what they're talking about. Here's a quote from the article:

"Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualised.

"This cannot be tested and so it is philosophy and not science.

This is not what we mean by parallel universes. What we mean is real universes in extra dimensions.
(emphasis added)

For example, string theories require a 10-D universe, the M-theory universe is 11-D. Those aren't "parallel" 4-D universes, they're dimensions in addition to the 4-D universe we experience.

Another universe, just a few millimeters away in the fifth dimension. That's the stuff of science fiction, and yet, is it possible?

Maybe we'll find out.
