Angels [W 82, 92]

I believe I have a guardian angel.

Angels are beings sent to do God's will. There are a range of "ranks", or variants of angels, influenced largely by celtic paganism during the dark ages. Micheal, the archangel, is God's bringer of war. He bares a flaming sword, and is not sent to earth to bring peace. It was he who cast out Lucifer. There are also cherubim, angels that appear as babies, think, Cupid. Ceraphim, Nephalim, etc. All with specific roles.

Most imagery of them is inspired by the romantic period in art history. Just like white, anglo saxon Jesus, despite being born in the middle east, to two middle eastern parents.

Italian Jesus, actually. People like to make a big deal out of "white" Jesus. Honestly, however, all it really boils down to are the kinds of models the artists in practice at the time had available.

Renaissance painters living in Italy had European Italian persons to work with, and they were most familiar with European features, so that was what they depicted. They were hardly alone in that either. It's actually pretty common for people all over the world to depict Christ as being of their own ethnicity.

That's because his ethnicity, simply speaking, isn't terribly important. It's his message and what he represents that people like to focus upon.

That actually makes me very happy. I hadn't realized the variety of depictions for the man. All I've ever seen are the standard white jesus made famous during the italian renaisance.

You're going to need to back up your statement with a citation since you are not God Himself and we won't give you that credit either.

Seriously? Ever open a Bible?

I think it's great that people put their own spin on Jesus, but the Bible clearly says he was as a very dark-skinned man. It's not important to his message, but it is important for historical accuracy. Christianity is a Middle Eastern religion that was ported to the West.

I have heard people complain about the depictions of Jesus, no matter what he looked like. I always thought there was so much more to pay attention to, rather than stuff like that.

I agree. I think there is much about Jesus that even an atheist like my self can appreciate. I put him in the same category as the Buddha. The two figures are similar in many, many ways.

Jesus being depicted as a white person is a flat-out perpetuation of white privilege and the bigotry that drives racial injustice in society. It's an illustration of racism in mainstream society. We should not ignore pervasive evidence of white supremacist thinking.

Lol.....

Yep, I get it. You can believe whatever you want. It's okay.

It's not a matter of belief, it's fact. When we, as society, transform brown heroes into white people, that is evidence of mainstream societal bigotry. There's no two ways about it, there is no debate.

Bound to make an appearance sooner or later.

You guys could use some angels.

"You guys"? What did I do?

I don't know if I have a guardian angel, but God definitely watches over me. If He does it with an angel, that's just icing on the cake. :)

Yep, I understand that. I said the last time that I get it.

Here's something though, unless you really think that Jesus is an angel, please take this to some other thread. I was wondering about angels, not depictions of Jesus. That can be another thread entirely.

I saw mine. It was beautiful. No joke.

I was responding to your post (which was responding to a post about his race) about depictions of Jesus. Heal thyself.
