Evangelicals step back from gay marriage fight - CNN.com

Washington (CNN) -- Evangelical leaders are taking a step back from their decades-long fight against gay marriage, softening their tone and recalibrating their goals. In recent interviews with about a half-dozen prominent evangelicals, no one listed opposition to gay marriage as their top priority. The leaders said they're more focused on protecting religious liberties as same-sex marriage becomes legal in a growing number of states.
"Is it time to differentiate between religious ceremony and civil ceremony?" Jim Daly, the president of Focus on the Family, said in an interview with CNN. "Civil ceremony to the Christian community is no different than getting your car registered."

The generational split is even more pronounced among the GOP: nearly two-thirds of Republicans under 30 favor same sex marriage

Tick tock says the clock....

Perhaps some of them finally realize it's too late.

They've already lost.

The Supreme Court will rule in favor of SSM and that'll be that.

Many will still get their panties in a twist but when the sun comes up the next day and the next, they'll start to realize the doom they've been predicting this would bring for so long was folly.

This clearly spells out the last gasping breaths of the marriage inequality movement. When the evangelicals are "recalibrating", you know it's over for them.

What a herd of disgusting beasts those religious "leaders" are. For years, they not only wailed about how civil marriages for GLBT's were the end of civilization, they even opposed civil unions because, in their eyes, it was "marriage by another name"

Now, it's "Civil ceremony to the Christian community is no different than getting your car registered."

Spare me, they are no different than progressives "adjusting" their long held positions on say, the military and labor unions in reponse to changing times.

There's a huge difference between adjusting a political position based on one's experiences and perceptions and changing what one claims to be religious belief based on the Bible

The evangelicals have not changed their religous beliefs regarding marriage (they have no plans to host same sex marriages, and they probably have no plans to place avowed homosexuals in leadership positions in their churches).

In short, jsut like the progessives still love labor union, the conservatives still love their religous teachings. Both have just "modified" how they advance that love.

Except no one denigrated the military on a personal level quite so much as the RR has done to homosexuals. This won't be forgotten or forgiven quite so immediately as you'd like, especially when civil rights are still being fought for in many states.

In other words, they've not changed in any meaningful way, only in delivering PC speeches. See: MLK's reflection on "lukewarm acceptance"

It's not over for me or a lot of Biblically-based Christians who understand gay marriage is nothing less than institutionalized sin.

And it will be "over" for the SSM sinners come Judgment Day.

Banking awfully hard on that judgement day aren't ya?

The Supreme Court ruled on interracial marriage in 1967, yet 41 years later electing a black man as president was still controversial and today people are still rioting over racial tensions, so I hardly think "that'll be that".

Ever notice the underlying theme to all these 'social inequality' moments is always 'you can't have it unless the government gives it to you'?

Since what's being discussed is "govt protection of rights", you actually *can't* have it unless the govt provides it.

They still can go after dancing...

The glee you have over your fantasies of hell fire and all that really is sinful.

You mis-read evangelicals. They are not gleeful that others will burn, they are gleeful that THEY will NOT burn. At least, that's been my experience.

Not if Kevin Bacon has anything to say about it...

Oh, I've seen enough posts from evangelicals where they get giddy and moist at the prospect of their fantasies of hell fire for others.

There are always exceptions.
