This is quite an inflammatory story - MODS: Please move as appropriate but I put this here because it has to do with a Pastor, Church and church members and I didn't know where else to put it except General Politics.

USA Today said:
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A pastor shocked his Montgomery, Ala., congregation and the entire community with the admission that he had sex with female church members while knowing that he had AIDS.
The Rev. Juan D. McFarland made the admission from the pulpit during a Sunday service in September, said Deacon Nathan Williams Jr., a 71-year member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
"He made it public. He shared it, and I'm just saying what he said," Williams said, adding that McFarland said the sex did not occur in the church sanctuary.

Williams said McFarland also admitted to drug use and misusing church funds.
"He was on marijuana, cocaine and all the drugs you can think of," Williams said. "Those are his words."
Williams said that McFarland also acknowledged that he had used money given to him for conventions on having "a good time."
According to WSFA-TV in Montgomery, after the Sept. 14 announcement, McFarland confirmed everything he shared with the congregation, including sex with parishioners, the drug use and the mishandling of church money. WSFA reports that McFarland was removed as pastor of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday.
The Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser spoke with McFarland on Thursday, but he said he was not interested in talking to members of the news media. Other church leaders could not immediately be reached for comment.

Pastor with AIDS admits to sex with church members

First - there are thousands and thousands of good Pastors out there but we only seem to remember the bad ones who have fallen hard. This is no exception. It's people like this that keep me from organized religion. This Pastor didn't act as a Pastor in any way and what kind of church is this where money drugs and sex are so freely thrown around?

The bible tells us not to judge others but you know what, I'm a 1000% time better than this fraud of a Pastor without going to church every Sunday. It's stories like this which reinforce that many who show up for Church are hypocrites and liars and these morons like McFarland do more to push people away from God than any atheist group. Well done McFarland... well done.

Wow.

This ex-pastor obviously needs a lot of help.

The best is the Italian mafia where everyone is all church and God and then after leaving that confession booth they kill 50 more people before going back in.

Wash

Rinse

Repeat

Not all church-goers are hypocrites, but a good amount can be c:

Pastors are just liberal arts students with a literature degree limited to a single text.

Isn't it against the law to do this?

So this is different than presidents who has sex with his flock? Just askin'

Well, in this case, yes. This pastor had a chronic STD that is incurable, and can be fatal, that he knew about.

That puts it on a whole different level

Illegal drug use certainly, but not sure if there is still evidence. If he had aids and had sex with church members knowing he had aids and didn't tell them, I would also think yes, it's a felony and puts those people he had sex with at risk of their lives.

I think that's the case as well. I remember seeing shows about it. i think you're in trouble if you have AIDS and know it and don't tell your partners.

From what I read on some articles about this specific case, it's only a misdemeanor in Alabama. This is unfortunate. I think people who do such things deserve severe punishment.

Only if he knew he had aids at the time of the sexcapade, In most cases the person only finds out they have aids when it is traced back to them from someone they had sex with. Is this case an exceptioin?

In this case, it was 'while knowing he had aids'. So, he knew he had aids.. he just didn't tell his partners.. until the big confession.

Indeed, we've been warned about false preachers. Against those in sheep's clothings.

The onus is for the TRUTH SEEKER or BELIEVER to be very careful....

.......that's why we've been warned!

If Satan wants to lead people away from God....what instrument is he most likely to use?

Whether we've been deceived or hurt by others, we give victory to Satan when we push away from God.
We end up really and truly deceived.....and only hurt ourselves all the more. Why will you let any human being make you do such a thing?

Why hand victory to Satan?

Pushing away from God is the gravest mistake one will ever make.

No one is claiming that what he was preaching was false. The problem is that he wasn't living what he was preaching.

I think it's important that we have an accurate view of what these so called wolves in sheep's clothing look like if we are to be able to identify them. It's important we don't reduce people like this pastor into a caricature or an archetype. Chances are that this pastor was not an evil person who conspired to enter into the priesthood in order to abuse his power and steal from the church. Chances are far more likely that this pastor was once a good person who sought to serve God and his congregation and that, over time, as a result of a series of bad decisions, he went down a path that ultimately led him to become the thieving, adulterous, possible murderer that he is today.

I think it's important for us to consider how these things happen, how we can prevent ourselves from ever going down a similar path, and how we can ensure that our churches are set up in such a way that the risk of something like this occurring are minimal.

I was speaking in the general sense when I talked about false preachers and wolves in sheep's clothings.
That the onus is upon us to know enough when we are being led astray. That's why we are given that warning numerous times in the Scriptures.

I was reacting to the OP statement:

It's people like this that keep me from organized religion.

It's stories like this which reinforce that many who show up for Church are hypocrites and liars and these morons like McFarland do more to push people away from God than any atheist group.

No, we're not supposed to judge. We leave the judgings to God.

And I don't think it's right to blame others for one's own decision to fall away from God.
After all, we're all sinners.

I think it's important that we have an accurate view of what these so called wolves in sheep's clothing look like if we are to be able to identify them.

We have to refer to the Authoritative Book - The Bible. If the teachings goes against the Scriptures, we know it is false. If we are being led to do what goes against the Scriptures, we are being led astray.

Also, it is not unusual for pedophiles or those with their own agendas to become a pastor, or a priest....or any job that gives the power of "authority." It is to our own benefit to be vigilant.

Ok, if that's the case there was a big difference.
