This is honest question, as I've been looking into eastern religion lately, which growing up I was quite ignorant of. Only heard of Buddhism. For instance, i'm learning of Jainism, which compels followers to total nonviolence. Like you can't even hurt a fly.

I'm curious to what extent others consider diff religions, or converted faiths at some point. Doesn't have to be eastern religion either, just anything. If you want to explain this desire to gain insight into other faiths, or to stick with how you were raised, that would also be helpful.

I'm familiar enough with most major eastern religions.
I'm very familiar with some of the polytheistic religions of old europe and the middle east.
Christian religions, at least the major ones and also other "abrahamic" religions.
And I have a sufficient knowledge of the old "new world" religions.

Jainism is a dying religion. Dying at the hand of hinduism which is often confused with jainism but they're very different. Jainism is the hippie's religion, don't get me wrong, much, much respect to those that follow it but their religion won't survive for long because of dwindling numbers... because they have very aggressive religious "neighbors" like hindus and muslims.

People from all over the world wandered through my parent's place, when I was small, where they discussed cross cultural exchange and understanding. I sat and listened (and sometimes talked too much). So a lot of religions passed by my way. There is a confusion of them.

I am neotantric. I was born and raised as a fundamentalist baptist til 11. In college I audited a course on the basics of catholicism. I have rejected most organized religions. However, I an a deist insofar I believe in the concept of a supreme divinity. I've done personal studies of Magna Mater and other primordial manifestations.

Some basic understanding of most major religions. Hinduism is one that interests me, and one I'd like to learn more about.

Muslim, Christian, Orthodox Christian are Albanian religions that are relatively practiced. Then I have personally read some about Hinduism and Buddhism.

Polytheism, interesting. Do you think any of that would hold appeal in modern times if people were more familiar? Or does it have no resemblance to the major religions today?

Yeah i wouldn't expect a pact of nonviolence to hold much sway in such places. But modernity and population boom makes nonviolence towards all living things impossible. You can't really have both. Still, i find that tenet of respect for all living things perhaps more in line with creationism than "gave man dominion over all creatures."

Thanks to all who replied so far. Very interesting to see the range of experiences

Well, I have studied the following...

Christianity (almost all major versions)
Islam
Judaism
Shinto
Zen
Buddhism
Taoism
Cao-Dai
Confucianism
Hinduism
Primitive Animism
Native American spiritual beliefs
and Neo-pagan religions (some of them, there are several)

... to various degrees.

I'm Baptist. :D

Hinduism is polytheistic. And it is practiced by 1 bil people. So it is a major religion.

Jaininism isn't dying out because of modernity. It's dying out because other religions are more aggressive and can inspire fanaticism and aggression to further their own power where as jainism, can't.

I'm Baptist. :D

I attended a Baptist Church--The teacher told me if I went up front and prayed 3 lines with him--I was born again( saved) ---unfortunately I knew that had 0 truth in it--they taught as well once saved always saved---Gods word teaches the opposite--- I am 100% positive--teachers of darkness misleading all who believe them.
Gods word teaches to be born again one must do this-Ephesians 4:22-24---as well Gods word teaches---Those who endure till the end will be saved--- Matt 10:22--- So no one is actually saved unless they endure till the end( death)--not 1 mortal has the right to tell another they are saved--they have 0 clue--just theory.

At that point in time--I was a long haired hippy rock guitarist--drunkard, drug dealer( maryjane) fornicator( lived with a woman)-thief--- My flesh was winning 24/7-- I was wicked--- there is 0 chance I was born again if I said 3 lines of prayer. They have 0 right to tell anyone they are saved or born again.
Ephesians 4:22-24 is the way to be born again( per-se)--- by stripping off the old personality (worker of iniquity) and putting on the new personality ( righteousness) and not looking back. Not an easy task in this world, but it can be done----Love conquers all.

Basic knowledge and pretty good feel of the major Abrahamic religions, although certainly no expert. Pretty weak on the eastern religions.
