Prior to the discussions I've had with Jehovah's Witnesses, I've never heard of the New World Translation Bible.
I came to know of it while doing research for my discussions. What little I know came from one or two sites, one of which is a place that I often use - gotquestions.org.

The New World Translation (NWT) is defined by the Jehovah's Witnesses’ parent organization (the Watchtower Society) as "a translation of the Holy Scriptures made directly from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek into modern-day English by a committee of anointed witnesses of Jehovah." The NWT is the anonymous work of the “New World Bible Translation Committee.” Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that the anonymity is in place so that the credit for the work will go to God. Of course, this has the added benefit of keeping the translators from any accountability for their errors and prevents real scholars from checking their academic credentials.

The New World Translation is unique in one thing – it is the first intentional, systematic effort at producing a complete version of the Bible that is edited and revised for the specific purpose of agreeing with a group's doctrine.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Watchtower Society realized that their beliefs contradicted Scripture. So, rather than conforming their beliefs to Scripture, they altered Scripture to agree with their beliefs. The “New World Bible Translation Committee” went through the Bible and changed any Scripture that did not agree with Jehovah’s Witness theology. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that, as new editions of the New World Translation were published, additional changes were made to the biblical text.

I am embarking on a quest with this thread. I will learn as I go seeking and researching the specific corruptions that has been made.

Hopefully, this thread will serve to provide some enlightenment to our misled and confused brethren.

Re: NEW WORLD TRANSLATION Bible

The publisher of this version has never made public the names of the translators. But former members of the Governing Body of the Jehovah's Witnesses organization have identified the members of the committee as Nathan H. Knorr (President of the organization), Frederick W. Franz (Vice-President), George D. Gangas, and Albert D. Schroeder.
According to Raymond V. Franz, the "principal translator of the Society's New World Translation" was Frederick W. Franz. (1) According to M. James Penton, "to all intents and purposes the New World Translation is the work of one man, Frederick Franz." (2) Franz afterwards became the President of the organization, from 1977 to 1992, and was responsible for the revisions.

The Forward to the first edition of the New Testament (1950) explained the need for the version, and also indicated the reason for its name: "It befits the significant time of transition from the old world to the righteous new world that translations of the Scriptures today should as far as possible eliminate the misleading influence of religious traditions which have their roots in paganism."
(p.7, emphasis added.)

Re: NEW WORLD TRANSLATION Bible

While the Watch Tower Society’s third president, Nathan H. Knorr, did not play the role of prophet, under his administration Fred W. Franz (his vice president) did issue a prediction. In his book, Life Everlasting in Freedom of the Sons of God, published in 1966, Franz wrote that it would be “appropriate” and “most fitting” for Jesus to begin His millennial reign in 1975 (which would mark the end of 6,000 years of human history). He said: “...it would not be by mere chance or accident but according to the loving purpose of Jehovah God for the reign of Jesus Christ...to run parallel with the seventh millennium of man’s existence” (as quoted in Franz, 1983, p. 61).

Although this prediction was worded cautiously, the point was clear enough that the Jehovah’s Witnesses looked forward to 1975 with tremendous expectation. That year passed, of course, as had 1914 and 1925. The prophecy failed, and disillusionment gripped several hundred thousand Jehovah’s Witnesses who subsequently abandoned the Watch Tower (Chretien, 1988).

Mr. Franz served as president of the Watch Tower from 1977 until his death in 1991. He, like his predecessors, failed the decisive test of a prophet: “If the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously”
(Deuteronomy 18:22).

Wow. I'm not familiar with that, but if it's true, I find it disturbing at the very least.

Re: NEW WORLD TRANSLATION Bible

Ironically.....Fred Franz exposed the WatchTower's false prophecies.

Re: NEW WORLD TRANSLATION Bible

Later, I became a part of a group that met with Franz on Wednesday nights, listening to him pontificate. We would discuss the “daily text,” a scripture passage. I will never forget his voice as he stretched out the syllables, “Brooother Blizaaaaard, what comment do you have on this text.” I would try my best to interpret it.

An excerpt of a long article from...

Personal Reflections on His life by
Former Third Generation Jehovah’s Witness

by Paul Blizard

On Dec. 24, 1992, The New York Times reported the death of Frederick William Franz, fourth president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. Franz'’ obituary said he died Dec. 22 at his residence in the society'’ headquarters in Brooklyn. He was 99. The obituary said, “A high point in his career was the 1958 convention of the Witnesses, when he addressed an audience of 253,922 people from 123 countries gathered at Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds.”

That was my first encounter with him.

I was just a child that summer when our family, as good Jehovah’s Witnesses, packed up our 1955 Pontiac and headed for the International Assembly in New York City.

----------

Once, I asked the wrong question and drew a violent response.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are taught that Jehovah God himself deals directly only with a group known as “the remnant” and that other Jehovah’s Witnesses must deal with Him through the Watchtower Society. The arrangement puzzled me.

I asked: “Brother Franz, since the Watchtower Society in Brooklyn is the only outlet for God to speak through, by way of printed materials and so forth, how would someone of the “remnant” get information from God to other Witnesses? I mean … how would an older sister, say, way out in the country, for example, give Spiritual food from Jehovah to others?”

Franz’s face turned red and he replied: “How? … By supporting what is printed in the Watchtower, that’s how!” With that, he went to his room. End of discussion.

I had no idea that the question would draw such a reaction. The question was one that could not be answered by anyone at Bethel without admitting that they were the sole distributors of truth, which contradicted what they taught. I believe Franz’s reaction was demonic. When on begins to question the foundations of the Watchtower, Satan reacts.

That's not really true. Every version since and including the King James Version was edited for political purposes and to conform with the positions of the writers. That was even the explicit purpose of the Council of Nicea. People have been revising religious tests for political purposes for a very very long time.

Re: NEW WORLD TRANSLATION Bible

The Watchtower Bible & Tract society has always sought scholarly support for its theology. The trouble is, sometimes they have difficulty finding it. In several Watchtower publications, the Society cites a work of Johannes Greber as supporting its theology.(See below) Greber's stand on many major doctrines is identical to that of the Watchtower society. He does not believe in the Trinity and denies that Jesus is God.

In His own translation of the New Testament, Greber translates John 1:1 in a way strikingly similar to the Society's NEW WORLD TRANSLATION. He calls Jesus, or the Word, a god, rather than God. Both Watchtower publications, MAKE SURE OF ALL THINGS, page 489, and THE WORD WHO IS HE ACCORDING TO JOHN, page 5, quote his translation to support their own rendering of that verse.

A look into Greber's background proves most enlightening. In 1923, Greber, a Roman Catholic priest, became interested in communication with spirit beings. These spirits often spoke through his wife, a spirit medium, and told him the Bible was full of errors. The Bible clearly forbids all contact with demons professing to bring messages from God. Knowing this, the Society has even attempted to hinder research about Greber by informing inquirers writing them in 1981, that they do not know where his new Testament can be obtained.3 Yet, we have a copy of an official Watchtower letter sent to the Greber Foundation dated December 20, 1980 thanking them for sending their New Testament and a book entitled COMMUNICATION WITH THE SPIRIT WORLD OF GOD.

The Watchtower Society first began quoting Greber's translation on John 1:1 in 1962. To show the depths of their deception and that they knew what they were doing, we find that six years earlier, in the 1956 Watchtower, page 111, the Society mentions Greber and warns readers against his demon-inspired translation!

WHO IS JOHANNES GREBER?

The council of Nicea was political? Not in this universe. You don't really understand church councils, do you?

The Letter of Dr. Julius Mantey to the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society

Dear Sirs:

I have a copy of your letter addressed to Caris in Santa Ana, California, and I am writing to express my disagreement with statements made in that letter, as well as in quotations you have made from the Dana-Mantey Greek Grammar.

(1) Your statement: "their work allows for the rendering found in the Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures at John 1:1." There is no statement in our grammar that was ever meant to imply that "a god" was a permissible translation in John 1:1.

These words are 100% bull--
After keeping Gods word in latin for 1000 years( refused to let anyone read Gods word except clergy who knew latin( few)( not of Jesus that is a guarantee) after the false councils were held--finally under the guise of heresy Catholicism translators erred to fit council false additives, by misusing commas. and subtle errors. Finally men could read Gods word for themselves and out of their own error filled translations--men could see that Catholicism was far removed from God( 100% fact)--But first out of their great love for their brothers--catholic clergy ordered every human trying to translate( before they did)--burned alive for heresy. They call it the dark ages for a reason---trinity darkness--the great apostasy.

I have read many translations--The NWT is the only one in harmony with itself and with the teachings of Jesus.

Wrong, that is just a flat out JW LIE. The Bible was kept in a single language so that crap like the NWT could not pollute the word of God. The false prophet CT Russell had to wait to spread his heresies.

Funny throughout the centuries--even trinity translators put--a god or was divine--but not God in the last line. Because it is a small g in the last line--this is fact. You are listening to the kind of men who voted to remove Gods personal name in the nearly 6800 places God put it because God wants it there--it took love for God to put it back--then get condemned by those who lacked the love for Gods will.

Well kjw47....the evidence is there. Mantey saying JW lied. What did Jesus say about lying?

Why should I listen to you? It's your opinion against a real scholar.
JW doesn't even have any scholar to support their claims.

And speaking of names, Jehovah isn't a translation for YHVH. There was no "J" in the ancient times.

Jesus taught--- Man does not live by bread alone, but by every utterance from God--this takes years of study and being taught by Jesus real teachers. Its an impossibility if one cannot read for themselves. This is a truth.

The Pharisees said the same about Jesus and his apostles( teachers) they didn't attend the schools of men to learn Gods truths.
Some greek scholars backed the NWT.
By making corrections in front of the ridiculing hearts--proves truth is what the JW teachers seek above face in the religious communities. The scholars can mock all they will just like the Pharisees did. both are wrong.

No J in Hebrew--there is J in English--Jehovah is English for Yhwh.

Back in the 70's I met with two JW's and talked for months. I told them back then that in order for them to be consistent that the Holy Spirit was not a person, they would have to change the verbiage in John chapter 14 and erase the "Him" and "He's". Later on they did just what I predicted.

That's another example of how you guys have rewritten the Bible to conform to your unbiblical beliefs.

Many things in Gods word are spoken of in the first person--but are not persons.
Every living creation mortal and angels-God and son.--has a personal name--but not the HS.
JOHN 17:1-6-- One must take in knowledge of Father and of Jesus to get eternal life--but not the HS.
1 Cor 8:6---Father and Jesus mentioned but not the HS. no equality with HS--no equality with Father and son--The Father is greater than i.
