First off by "non-religious" I do not say atheists (although they can be), rather a person that could believe but simply never bought in to formal worship, etc.

My favorite religious person would be Reverend Billy Graham.

Non-religious is tougher because so many acknowledge a greater power but simply seldom pray and dream of heaven etc.

I guess my father gets the nod for the second category.

I'd have to say Thich Nhat Hanh has been a big influence upon my philosophical thoughts. He's a great writer, a man of real and uncompromising peace, and as wise as the ages. I'd place Charlotte Joko Beck in that category too, apart from the being a woman bit.

Anyone who doesn't put a parent or close family member in the second category needs either shooting or counselling. :)

I consider that an odd, even somewhat divisive, question. Why would I want to separate the people I admire on grounds of whether they're religious or not? If I admire someone, I admire them, full stop.

Hamza Yusuf -- Islamic Scholar
Chogyam Trungpa -- I guess he would be able to fulfill the second, as his work was an attempt to secularize Vajrayana Buddhism...

I'm going under the assumption you're speaking of people alive in your own lifetime...

Korean Zen Master Seung Sahn

My father

Bits and pieces of different people I have known along the way, people who have seemed to figure out how to live life to the fullest given whatever adversities they face or have faced. I am in awe of selfless people who give so much of themselves to others.

I would say Jesus Christ, for both.
