Israel religious court fines woman $86 a day until she circumcises son!

Israeli court fines woman for refusing to circumcise her son | World news | theguardian.com

What a horrible travesty of justice!

This is Sharia, this is the Taliban, Jewish style.

The Israeli Supreme Court better overturn this disgusting perversion right quick!!

What happened to religious freedom? What happened to democracy?

Disgusting...

Shh, didn't you know that all Americans are supposed to think Israel can do no wrong, and we're supposed to forget they were the mothers of modern terrorism, and so much more.

Please please, don't be mean to Israel, it's such a victim already. /sarcasm

So the court is demanding the woman violate the rights of her child. Idiocy at it's finest. The best part is that it's religious idiocy, which is of course the best idiocy of all if not the greatest.

I greatly respect religious freedom and parental rights.

But this is ridiculous.

I've never heard of any Jewish court, Israeli or otherwise, making such a horrible ruling.

Using the power of the state to impose religious extremism, is the road to Fascism.

This seems to be a religious court and not the real law of the land. The article says the Justice Ministry is handling the appeal and as far as I know, religious court have no true authority, any submission to them is voluntary. So, yes, this is kind of ridiculous but don't pain all of Israel's legal system on this.

You know that we have religious groups right here in the god old USA who have "laws" for their flocks. But we don't judge American law by these outliers.

Israel can and does wrong things. I really disapprove of their convenient settlement announcements the moment there is even a hint of peace talks. But - just as Obama has not caused every last single problem in America, Israeli decisions by certain courts or political or military groups should not make everyone a bad guy.

A Shariah court. An Orthodox Jew Court. Choose one for your trial.

I don't respect religious practices such as this. Any religion that champions it needs to be made an example of.

Here is a better link with more information flushing out how this case came to be and what it represents: Israel court fines woman over not circumcising son | Fox News

This is in the middle of a divorce. The mother does not want the circumcision, but the father does.

Also:
"The decision is not based only on religious law. It is for the welfare of a Jewish child in Israel not to be different from his peers in this matter," said Shimon Yaakovi, legal adviser to the rabbinical court.
...so this was an anti-bullying move. I thought liberals would be pleased.

What does it better represent? I actually hoped the mother was refusing it in spite of a medical disorder that would require a surgical solution. That seemed like the only sane reason for this judgment.
Instead we have a faux-secular excuse of being a victim of pre-crime: future bullying. As if it's not easy to verbally strike back at 'tough' dudes who take an interest in your penis.

Lol! So the other boys are going to pick on him for being uncut? They must be retarded and not realize the damage their parents did to them. I find that pretty funny. I love when people make fun of themselves on accident. Just teach the boy about the practice and give him ammo to use against the idiot bullies that don't know enough to keep their mutilated asses shut. See what they have to say when they realize they are inferior and the boy having been left alone is not. If anyone here should be picked on it should be them.

The link better represents why this is even an issue, why any court would bother even caring if a child was circumcised, to then make a ruling.

We take it for granted in America because we have a clear wall of separation between church and state. All we have to quibble about are mottoes on coins. In Israel, however, religious authorities have real power to decide several civil matters. Not so in the US. Someone asked "what happened to freedom of religion"? Israel more or less doesn't have it. Yeah you don't have to be Jewish but if you're not then you really are a second class citizen.

I suspect the mother is not Jewish, and if so, that played a heavy roll in the court's decision (and the divorce in the first place).

Okay. But the implication from the OP article is that Israel is some sort of pseudo theocratic state and the fox article reconfirms that?

I'm not sure what was elucidated.

Well in all fairness I'm not sure what OP wanted to accomplish with this thread. It's fine to have an opinion about circumcision but OP is about a court enforcing said belief. Not sure why this thread is in the Religious Forum instead of the International Forum.
