It’s a “massive downgrade of U.S.-Vatican ties,” said former U.S. Ambassador James Nicholson in the National Catholic Reporter. “It’s turning this embassy into a stepchild of the embassy to Italy. The Holy See is a pivot point for international affairs and a major listening post for the United States, and … [it’s] an insult to American Catholics and to the Vatican.”

Obama

Once again Obama shows his vile contempt for the Church and the faith that 25% of Americans share.

What a despicable creature...

Vatican City is a sovereign country. Would we move our embassy in Albania to Italy? Or our embassy in Austria to Italy? Ones just across the Adriatic Sea and the other is contiguous to Italy.

What about Luxemburg? Should we just combine that one with France, or Belgium, or Germany?

Not a good move.

What's the big ****ing deal?

Ireland closed it's embassy some time ago and it's hugely catholic country... are they equally as disgusting?

And besides, it's not even really closing... it's just moving.

The Faux outrage here is unreal...

Why do we even need embassy with the Vatican? If we are going to have embassies in other countries then shouldn't they be real countries? Not tiny towns or religious complexes?

Lets close a few more Embassies.....its the 22nd Century. Video-conferencing is available. They need some private time. Web-cams are available. Just sayin.

I cant tell if you are kidding or not, but it really is a much smaller world than it used to be.

The Ambassador to Italy can easily wear two hats which includes the Vatican. I doubt the Embassy in the Vatican does much business there anyway. It is no big deal.

Heya Mak.....Why let politicians waste money traveling about when they don't need to? Personally I think we could kinda Centralize by continents. Or Build them out in International Waters. Why pay money to lease another country's ground?

Yeah there's only about 1.21 BILLION catholics in the world, why would our diplomatic ties with the Vatican be important?

I've had it with Obama and his subversive, little-man agenda.

So the Mexican Ambassador can easily wear the hat for Spain... Brazil for Portugal, Chile for Peru, hell, why not Austria for Germany, China for Japan, Egypt for South Africa, I mean seriously...

It is a diplomatic smack in the face. It is an insult.

It would be if that embassy served those 1.21 billion Catholics, but that embassy does not. That embassy serves a city/state of approximately 800 people, not 1.21 billion which only around 450 of them are actual citizens. I am sure our Embassy in Rome can accommodate that extra work load that comes from those 450 citizens of the Vatican. Where ever those other 1.21 billion catholic resides minus the 450 from the Vatican, they have American Embassies in their country to take care of them. If they reside in the United States, they do not need an embassy and they sure aren't served by our Embassy in the Vatican.

How so? Closing an Embassy that took care of 450 Vatican citizens which the Pope was one, 800 people total reside in the Vatican. If the U.S. wants to have our Ambassador meet with the Pope or vice versa, Our Rome Ambassador is just a hop, skip and a jump away. I would be surprised if our Embassy in Rome under goes a name change and the mission of the Ambassador there is change. Our Embassy in Rome now becomes the Embassy to Italy and the Vatican and our Ambassador is put in charge of relations of both Italy and the Vatican. I am sure the extra work load won't effect the efficiency of which he discharges his duties.

The outrage is genuine. It is a slap in the face.

Yes, Ireland is equally disgusting.

Moving to another country, that is...

The symbolism(which is a big part of diplomatic relations) is lost on you it would appear..

and so the same for the previously mentioned countries as well...

Sounds great, I'm sure they'll be happy they've got your confidence...

It doesn't bother me one bit which countries we have embassies in and which we don't. Many times in the past our country has had another's countries embassy handle our relations with the host country. Our Ambassador to Rome will just wear two hats and instead of walking to a meeting to met the pope, he will make a ten minute drive. We will still have an Ambassador meeting face to face, not a problem.

You're being pretty redonkulous about the whole affair.

The Vatican serves all 1.21 billion Catholics

I dont think its lost on anyone, its completely willful

True, but our Embassy in the Vatican served 450 Vatican citizens. Our embassy in the Vatican did not serve the 1.21 billion Catholics you mentioned. Our Embassy in Rome can easily accommodate the 450 citizens of the Vatican and our Ambassador in Rome can easily meet with the Pope anytime the Pope so desires. Nothing lost.

Each of our embassies serve 300 million American citizens. That's their charter.

The Vatican is not a country, we shouldn't waste money on an embassy. No longer continuing to provide special privileges is not showing vile contempt, it is setting things right. I've been to the Vatican, many cities have larger public parks.

In spiritual matters yes, in legal matters regarding citizenship no. If you had a problem while traveling abroad, you'd go to a U.S. embassy to resolve it.

The Vatican may be the most powerful church in the world, but the Holy See is miniscule as a nation. Nations of 450 people simply aren't worth having a dedicated full time ambassador when you can borrow the guy from Rome. Its not an insult to anyone, Monaco and San Marino share ambassadors as well.

There's two billion Muslims. Do we have an embassy just for their holy city?

Explain why only religion in the world deserves a U.S.A. embassy.

The embassy is where ambassadors and diplomats are staffed. Might be a good idea to have the pope on board with your foreign policy when nearly 2 billion people hang on his every word. I'm not even Catholic and I see this, why can't you?
