Paul Harvey, "If I were the Devil."

Yeah ... because patriotism and ambition are christian fruits ... what a crock of **** (some of it, I agree with some of what he says though, pornography and the pornographic view of women and love, the sedating of people with pills and pharmecuticles and so on)

The Devil temps Abusing power for personal wealth (making bread out of stones), acting presumpteously and taking advantage of your priviledges (jumping from a ledge because God will protect you), and lust for power and riches (one act of worship for the kingdoms). The fact that the rulers of the world economy are people at Godlman Sachs and JP Morgan and Citigroup, people that in 2007 literally made billions by artificially raising food prices putting millions in starvation so they could make a profit, and that action is rewarded with tremendous wealth, is evidence that the Devil is in full swing.

That is OK, its a start my left wing friend.

Interesting 100 people viewed and only a couple of posts.........

Funny how you both choose this narrative around the same time. Couldn't be because you heard it as a talking point some where.

BINGO! The rightwing noise machine sent out the memo.

Harvey said a lot of stupid things over a long period of time. I think the OP found the stupidest.

By the way, if I were the devil, I'd dress up like a televangelist and say stupid and smug things in the name of Christianity, things like America is a Christian nation, and God is my CEO, and Jesus doesn't like lazy Welfare Queens and communists. Then I sit back and watch good people reject the gospel because of it. And I'd laugh with particular glee at those who didn't reject my fake Christianity, but rather actually joined my "church" of money and sanctimony and smug patriotism.

Why am I not surprised that you of all people would poo poo this. You can not deny that what he said in 1965 are happening.

It's hard to know where to begin with such a vapid laundry list of conservative obsessions. Besides the fact that he's criticizing capitalism and the free market for making stuff that people want (something apparently neither you nor he noticed), let's start with these falsehoods;

1. Nobody is praying to their Father in Washington.
2. Judges don't protect pornography, the first amendment does.
3. Nobody is taking from those who have and giving to those who want, killing ambition -- our social safety net is in tatters and the rich are as ambitious and greedy as ever; working people are working harder than ever.
4. Nobody is "confiding" that what's good is bad (whatever that means) -- except maybe rightwing Christians.
5. Students are more disciplined today than ever.
6. Promoting gambling as a way of getting rich is the essence of entrepreneurship -- are you sure you and Paul don't like that?
7. We are producing more high quality books and movies than ever.
8. Nobody is encouraged to do as they please in this society, except may the entitled rich.

This is just psycho-nostalgia, a foolish conservative longing for a time that never existed, as a dishonest way to distract us from the real problems we have. It's a type of Reverso-Meme: claim people are lazy even though they are working harder than ever; claim kids are stupid even though they are more educated than ever. And so on. Pure dishonest dreck.

I think the Devil has done real well blinding the stiff-necked liberals to the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, and his resurrection and salvation.

I think the that televangelists and other rightwing Christians are doing the devil's work -- could anything turn more people off to Christianity than these smug, sanctimonious, unctuous hypocrites?

You lump the good with the bad. That's tacky.

Billy Graham was a great TV evangelist, and he'll bring more people into the Pearly Gates than a million loony-left liberals.

Points for "unctuous," but you forgot "oleaginous," one of my faves.

And maybe criticizing one's own brothers and sisters in this way isn't constructive either. ;)

They aren't my brothers. I'm serious: I believe Robertson and Crouch and Haggard and Swaggert and the rest are satanic. They destroy the Christian witness.

There are no good televangelists. Graham's "celebrity" evangelism, catering to Republicans and billionaires, was contemptuous.

Paul Harvey said this in 1965. Chilling how it all came true.

If I Were the Devil - (BEST VERSION) by PAUL HARVEY audio restored - YouTube

Yeah, I snickered and closed it right at 0:21, when Harvey asserted that the Devil already has his claws in 80% of the world's population.

I always enjoyed his Rest of the Story and his noon-time newscast, but if you think for a minute that he's some kind of political prophet you've got another thing coming.

Of course, I'm still convinced you're a much younger person with a liberal socio-political world view and a master's degree in trolling.

You've got to be kidding, joaquin. He filled football stadiums and any who wanted, irregardless of whether they were rich or poor, democrat or republican, came down to the stage area to receive the Lord.

Anyone making money from the Gospel is in direct opposition to Christ's commandment.

Matthew 10:8 - "You received without payment; give without payment."

Nice try.

1 Timothy 5:17-18 - Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.” And in another place, “Those who work deserve their pay!”

Dude, what translation are you working ... ???

Here is that scripture in the NRSV:
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor,[e] especially those who labor in preaching and teaching; 18 for the scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves to be paid.”

The scripture has nothing to do with pay ... the early apostles didn't make money on the message, they all worked and contributed to the church just like everyone else.

The greek word, used is "double honor,"

I'ts pretty dishonest to use a loose, and bad translation to try and make a point that simply isn't there in the actual scripture.

This has been debunked (on this site before as well if I recall).

This is not from 1965, whomever made this video and posted it on Youtube is breeching the 9th commandment to ironically further their religious cause.

Harvey did have a "If I were the Devil" essay in 1965, but it's quite different from this one. Every malaise he pointed to was contemporary with 1965 social ills, nothing prophetic at all. This video trying to pass itself off as Paul Harvey is based on an updated version of the essay from the 90s, which again was nothing prophetic for the times.

The info is below.

Dry up with your self-serving 'dishonest' tripe. The translation was NLT (New Living Translation).

And if you need more evidence to help enlighten you there's this:

1 Cor. 9:3-18, My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 Do we not have a right to eat and drink? 5 Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? 6 Or do only Barnabas and I not have a right to refrain from working? 7 Who at any time serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and does not eat the fruit of it? Or who tends a flock and does not use the milk of the flock? 8 I am not speaking these things according to human judgment, am I? Or does not the Law also say these things? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing.” God is not concerned about oxen, is He? 10 Or is He speaking altogether for our sake? Yes, for our sake it was written, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of sharing the crops. 11 If we sowed spiritual things in you, is it too much if we should reap material things from you? 12 If others share the right over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we did not use this right, but we endure all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share with the altar? 14 So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.
