Has anyone thought that the "gods" the ancients worshipped really were ETs who were experimenting here on Earth and we are the result of those experiments?

There is a theory that dinosaurs were extinguished because the ETs had to make way for the eventual development of Homo sapiens.

It's inconceivable that they would not leave evidence, if only to let us know that there are others out there.

I don't think there's a guarantee that, given 65 million years, rats will always spawn humans.

It might be fun to think about, but there is no reason to believe it happened. There is no need to introduce an extraterrestrial or supernatural intelligence to explain how humans came into existence. Thus, to insert such an intelligence into the equation is making it more complicated than it needs to be. Why add unneeded variables?

As for the extinction of the dinosaurs, the current hypotheses are MUCH simpler and more plausible than the ET one. It doesn’t mean it is impossible that ETs did what you suggest, but there is currently no reason to believe they did and ample evidence in support of contrary hypotheses.

While I personally feel certain there is intelligent life “out there”, I feel equally certain that they have never visited this planet. The galaxy, let alone the universe, is a big, big, BIG place.

There's also the theory that Homo sapiens are genetically modified monkeys created by a large and very evil American corporation that organized a secret time-travel expedition. That's where all the exploited workers and under-protected consumers come from. Naturally, the newly minted sentient GMOs regarded their makers as gods who have their corporate headquarters on the top of Olympus or some other natural skyscraper.
(That's exactly what "Monsanto" means - Mons Sanctus, Holy Mountain)

Now THAT sounds more reasonable. :)
