Biblical Prophecies

One of the coolest prophecies was the restoration of Israel. I was looking up some verses to illustrate my point and found this site that shares 10 points with respect to Israel's return.

I believe that the restoration of Isreal can give many people confidence that what the Bible says is true.

Here's the site.

"One interpretation of the numerous prophecies is that the end of the world will follow the "return" of the Jews to Palestine, so that the folk who promote this migration presume even to determine the moment when Jehovah shall bring the planet to an end ... (A) perplexed French politician at the Peace Conference of 1919 ... asked Mr. Balfour why he was so eager to bring about "the return" of the Jews to Palestine; if this truly was the fulfilment of prophecy, then prophecy also decreed that the end of the world would follow. Mr. Balfour replied languidly. "Precisely, that is what makes it all so very interesting" - Douglas Reed.

The most staunch (non-Jewish) supporters of this idea that the "restoration of Israel" is prophecy being fulfilled are known as Christian Zionists. Yet this relativity recent belief has been condemned by religious leaders in that very land:

"JERUSALEM (Catholic Online) – Christian Zionism is a false and extreme theological and political philosophy that is has become a corrupting influence in the politics of Israel and the United States, said a Catholic patriarch and three other religious leaders here, urging Christians churches to break their silence."

Holy Land religious leaders condemn Christian Zionism as false, a corrupting influence - International - Catholic Online

Rev. Ted Pike, director of the National Prayer Network, a Christian/conservative watchdog organization, states:

Zionists have no Biblical foundation for their claim that a nation of unrepentant Jews occupied Palestine under God’s blessing a century ago. God clearly instructed Jeremiah (Jer. 29:4-8) that such Jews should live outside His holy land, seeking the welfare of their host nations

The Biblical law that God will not allow a disobedient Jewish nation to dwell in Palestine is one of the most emphasized doctrines of the Old Testament. It is stated in the clearest language more than two dozen times in Leviticus and Deuteronomy alone!

The late Grace Halsell has also written a lot on this:

"Christian Zionism is a dangerous and growing segment of Christianity, which was popularized by the 19th-century American Cyrus Scofield when he wrote into a Bible his interpretation of events in history. These events all centered around Israel-past, present, and future. His Scofield Bible is today the most popular of the reference Bibles. Scofield said that Christ cannot return to earth until certain events occur: The Jews must return to Palestine, gain control of Jerusalem and rebuild a temple, and then we all must engage in the final, great battle called Armageddon. Estimates vary, but most students of Armageddon theology agree that as a result of these relatively recent interpretations of Biblical scripture, 10 to 40 million Americans believe Palestine is God's chosen land for the Jews."

I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with these “patriarchs”, whoever they are.

It is correct that the Old Testament doctrines do “not allow a disobedient Jewish nation to dwell in Palestine”.

However, these Old Testament (old covenant) laws became moot with the advent of the New Testament (new covenant). One of the starkest differences between the Old and New Testament commands is that for every Old Testament law there is a penalty. However, New Testament commands do not possess any corresponding penalties.

Mostly agree...maybe totally agree. We have to remember that Christ returns not once but twice. He first returns to claim His Belivers (the Rapture). As I understand it Believers aren’t here for Armageddon. After all of the torment spoken of in Revelation, Jesus returns again to establish his 1,000 year kingdom.

In regards to the return of the Jewish people to Israel, Orson Hyde, one of the original 12 apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, dedicated the land under direction of the Lord for the return of the Jewish people. This man was an orphan, and thought to be of Jewish descent, and had traveled to Israel in much adversity. Perfect imagery, an orphan, a humble Jewish man, I imagine basically in rag cloths when he finally arrived to give the prayer. Part of an article from the Ensign magazine. The dedicatory prayer is given in bold font below:

Although the precise date is not known, some time after Orson’s baptism, the Prophet Joseph Smith gave Orson a most unusual blessing:

“In due time thou shalt go to Jerusalem, the land of thy fathers, and be a watchman unto the house of Israel; and by thy hands shall the Most High do a great work, which shall prepare the way and greatly facilitate the gathering together of that people.” 3

That mission, though at the time still in the future, was reconfirmed in 1835 when Orson was ordained as one of the original twelve Apostles of this dispensation. At his ordination, Elder Hyde was told that he would “go forth according to the commandment, both to Jew and Gentile, and to all nations, kingdoms and tongues.” 4

On 3 April 1836, a singular event occurred that would open the way for Orson’s mission: Moses appeared in the Kirtland Temple and delivered to the Prophet Joseph “the keys of the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth.” (D&C 110:11.) Never again would the gathering of Israel be spoken of as a future event. In a letter written by the Prophet in 1840, he noted that the Jews “have been scattered abroad among the Gentiles for a long period; and in our estimation, the time of the commencement of their return to the Holy Land has already arrived.” 5

Elder Hyde would figure greatly in that commencement. In March 1840, he told of an extraordinary spiritual experience he had as he lay in bed pondering where the Lord would have him serve. He later recorded parts of this experience in a letter:

“The vision of the Lord, like clouds of light, burst into my view. … The cities of London, Amsterdam, Constantinople and Jerusalem, all appeared in succession before me, and the Spirit said unto me, ‘Here are many of the children of Abraham whom I will gather to the land that I gave to their fathers; and here also is the field of your labors.’” 6

The following month, during April conference 1840, the Prophet commissioned Elder Hyde to go to Palestine and there dedicate that land for the return of the Jewish people.

After a long and arduous trip fraught with suffering and personal sacrifice, Elder Hyde arrived in Jerusalem. On Sunday, 24 October 1841, Elder Hyde climbed the Mount of Olives, and just as he had seen in the vision, offered a heavenly inspired dedicatory prayer. 7

In one of the prayer’s opening paragraphs, Elder Hyde focused on three themes: (1) the gathering of Judah, (2) the building up of Jerusalem, and (3) the rearing of a temple. 8 The balance of the prayer, for the most part, is a supplication that these three objectives be accomplished.

Prayer of Orson Hyde on the Mount of Olives

"O Thou! who art from everlasting to everlasting, eternally and unchangeably the same, even the God who rules in the heavens above, and controls the destinies of men on the earth, wilt Thou not condescend, through thine infinite goodness and royal favor, to listen to the prayer of Thy servant which he this day offers up unto Thee in the name of Thy holy child Jesus, upon this land, where the Son of Righteousness set in blood, and thine Anointed One expired.

"Be pleased, O Lord, to forgive all the follies, weaknesses, vanities, and sins of Thy servant, and strengthen him to resist all future temptations. Give him prudence and discernment that he may avoid the evil, and a heart to choose the good; give him fortitude to bear up under trying and adverse circumstances, and grace to endure all things for Thy name's sake, until the end shall come, when all the Saints shall rest in peace.

"Now, O Lord! Thy servant has been obedient to the heavenly vision which Thou gavest him in his native land; and under the shadow of Thine outstretched arm, he has safely arrived in this place to dedicate and consecrate this land unto Thee, for the gathering together of Judah's scattered remnants, according to the predictions of the holy Prophets -- for the building up of Jerusalem again after it has been trodden down by the Gentiles so long, and for rearing a Temple in honor of Thy name. Everlasting thanks be ascribed unto Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou hast preserved Thy servant from the dangers of the seas, and from the plague and pestilence which have caused the land to mourn. The violence of man has also been restrained, and Thy providential care by night and by day has been exercised over Thine unworthy servant. Accept, therefore, O Lord, the tribute of a grateful heart for all past favors, and be pleased to continue Thy kindness and mercy towards a needy worm of the dust.

"O Thou, Who didst covenant with Abraham, Thy friend, and who didst renew that covenant with Isaac, and confirm the same with Jacob with an oath, that Thou wouldst not only give them this land for an everlasting inheritance, but that Thou wouldst also remember their seed forever. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob have long since closed their eyes in death, and made the grave their mansion. Their children are scattered and dispersed abroad among the nations of the Gentiles like sheep that have no shepherd, and are still looking forward for the fulfillment of those promises which Thou didst make concerning them; and even this land, which once poured forth nature's richest bounty, and flowed, as it were, with milk and honey, has, to a certain extent, been smitten with barrenness and sterility since it drank from murderous hands the blood of Him who never sinned.

"Grant, therefore, O Lord, in the name of Thy well-beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to remove the barrenness and sterility of this land, and let springs of living water break forth to water its thirsty soil. Let the vine and olive produce in their strength, and the fig-tree bloom and flourish. Let the land become abundantly fruitful when possessed by its rightful heirs; let it again flow with plenty to feed the returning prodigals who come home with a spirit of grace and supplication; upon it let the clouds distil virtue and richness, and let the fields smile with plenty. Let the flocks and the herds greatly increase and multiply upon the mountains and the hills; and let Thy great kindness conquer and subdue the unbelief of Thy people. Do Thou take from them their stony heart, and give them a heart of flesh; and may the Sun of Thy favor dispel the cold mists of darkness which have beclouded their atmosphere. Incline them to gather in upon this land according to Thy word. Let them come like clouds and like doves to their windows. Let the large ships of the nations bring them from the distant isles; and let kings become their nursing fathers, and queens with motherly fondness wipe the tear of sorrow from their eye.

"Thou, O Lord, did once move upon the heart of Cyrus to show favor unto Jerusalem and her children. Do Thou now also be pleased to inspire the hearts of kings and the powers of the earth to look with a friendly eye towards this place, and with a desire to see Thy righteous purposes executed in relation thereto. Let them know that it is Thy good pleasure to restore the kingdom unto Israel -- raise up Jerusalem as its capital, and constitute her people a distinct nation and government, with David Thy servant, even a descendant from the loins of ancient David to be their king.

"Let that nation or that people who shall take an active part in behalf of Abraham's children, and in the raising up of Jerusalem, find favor in Thy sight. Let not their enemies prevail against them, neither let pestilence or famine overcome them, but let the glory of Israel overshadow them, and the power of the Highest protect them; while that nation or kingdom that will not serve Thee in this glorious work must perish, according to Thy word --- Yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

"Though Thy servant is now far from his home, and from the land bedewed with his earliest tear, yet he remembers, O Lord, his friend: who are there, and family, whom for Thy sake he has left. Though poverty and privation be our earthly lot, yet ah! do Thou richly endow us with an inheritance where moth and rust do not corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal.

"The hands that have fed, clothed, or shown favor unto the family of Thy servant in his absence, or that shall hereafter do so, let them not lose their reward, but let a special blessing rest upon them, and in Thy kingdom let them have an inheritance when Thou shalt come to be glorified in this society.

"Do Thou also look with favor upon all those through whose liberality I have been enabled to come to this land; and in the day when Thou shalt reward all people according to their works, let these also not be passed by or forgotten, but in time let them be in readiness to enjoy the glory of those mansions which Jesus has gone to prepare. Particularly do Thou bless the stranger in Philadelphia, whom I never saw, but who sent me gold, with a request that I should pray for him in Jerusalem. Now, O Lord, let blessings come upon him from an unexpected quarter, and let his basket be filled, and his storehouse abound with plenty, and let not the good things of the earth be his only portion, but let him be found among those to whom it shall be said, `Thou hast been faithful over a few things, and I will make thee ruler over many.'

"O my Father in heaven! I now ask Thee in the name of Jesus to remember Zion, with all her Stakes, and with all her assemblies. She has been grievously afflicted and smitten; she has mourned; she has wept; her enemies have triumphed, and have said, `Ah, where is thy God?' Her Priests and Prophets have groaned in chains and fetters within the gloomy walls of prisons, while many were slain, and now sleep in the arms of death. How long, O Lord, shall iniquity triumph, and sin go unpunished?

"Do Thou arise in the majesty of Thy strength, and make bare Thine arm in behalf of Thy people. Redress their wrongs, and turn their sorrow into joy. Pour the spirit of light and knowledge, grace and wisdom, into the hearts of her Prophets, and clothe her Priests with salvation. Let light and knowledge march forth through the empire of darkness, and may the honest in heart flow to their standard, and join in the march to go forth to meet the Bridegroom.

"Let a peculiar blessing rest upon the Presidency of Thy Church, for at them are the arrows of the enemy directed. Be Thou to them a sun and a shield, their strong tower and hiding place; and in the time of distress or danger be Thou near to deliver. Also the quorum of the Twelve, do Thou be pleased to stand by them for Thou knowest the obstacles which they have to encounter, the temptations to which they are exposed, and the privations which they must suffer. Give us, [the Twelve] therefore, strength according to our day, and help us to bear a faithful testimony of Jesus and His Gospel, to finish with fidelity and honor the work which Thou hast given us to do, and then give us a place in Thy glorious kingdom. And let this blessing rest upon every faithful officer and member in Thy Church. And all the glory and honor will we ascribe unto God and the Lamb forever and ever. Amen."

On the top of Mount Olives I erected a pile of stones as a witness according to ancient custom. On what was anciently called Mount Zion, [Moriah?] where the Temple stood, I erected another, and used the rod according to the prediction upon my head.

Interestingly, Orson Hyde, the LDS apostle who dedicated the holy land for the return of the Jews in the dedicatory prayer above, was born on January 8, 1805 which was the Festival of Trumpets on the Hebrew Calendar and died on November 28, 1878 which was the Day of Atonement on the Hebrew calendar. "The Feast of Trumpets is traditionally a more solemn occasion than other feasts because it symbolizes the Judgment Day when the Creator judges each person. It became traditional to use a trumpet made of a ram's horn, called a shofar, which is often translated "cornet" in the Bible. Although each person is judged on this day, most have 10 days to repent of their sins, until the Day of Atonement, which the judgment is sealed."-John Pratt

In the 1830's under great persecution the Mormons continually moved westward (on a side note, this morning I was playing around with the Hebrew calendar spreadsheet and thought you know the exodus from Egypt with Moses was during Passover, symbolic of the escape into the wilderness. I thought I bet the Mormons exodus into the wilderness to their promise land in the Salt Lake Valley began during Passover also. So I entered in April 5, 1847, the day "an advance company led by Brigham Young set off from Winter Quarters on their trek across the country, (1,040 miles) to a new home in the tops of the Rocky Mountains." Sure enough this date was during Passover week on the Hebrew Calendar.) But let's go back to early 1830s.

29 Ye hear of wars in far countries, and you say that there will soon be great wars in far countries, but ye know not the hearts of men in your own land.
30 I tell you these things because of your prayers; wherefore, treasure up wisdom in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth; but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.
31 And that ye might escape the power of the enemy, and be gathered unto me a righteous people, without spot and blameless -
32 Wherefore, for this cause I gave unto you the commandment that ye should go to the Ohio; and there I will give unto you my law; and there you shall be endowed with power from on high; . . .D&C 38:29

64 And even now, let him that goeth to the east teach them that shall be converted to flee to the west, and this in consequence of that which is coming on the earth, and of secret combinations. D&C 42:64

March 8, 1831
Ye hear of wars in foreign lands; but, behold, I say unto you, they are nigh, even at your doors, and not many years hence ye shall hear of wars in your own lands.
64 Wherefore I, the Lord, have said, gather ye out from the eastern lands, assemble ye yourselves together ye elders of my church; go ye forth into the western countries, call upon the inhabitants to repent, and inasmuch as they do repent, build up churches unto me. D&C 45:63-64

Then on Christmas 1832 Joseph Smith received what is referred to as the Civil War prophecy. Brigham Young would later state the circumstances surrounding this prophecy:
Brother Joseph had that revelation concerning this nation at a time when the brethren were reflecting and reasoning with regard to African slavery on this continent, and the slavery of the children of men throughout the world. There are other revelations, besides this one, not yet published to the world.
Journal of Discourses, 8:58.

When reading this think of the Civil War, WW1 and WW2, how after the world wars the imperialist nations were weakened and 3rd world nations all around the world started declaring their independence, how under the cold war as the Soviet Union was marshaled for war nations enslaved under communism became free after the Soviet collapse.

On Dec. 25, 1832, Joseph received the following revelation about the American Civil War, now printed as Section 87 of the Doctrine and Covenants:
1 Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls;
2 And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place.
3 For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations.
4 And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.
5 And it shall come to pass also that the remnants who are left of the land will marshal themselves, and shall become exceedingly angry, and shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.
6 And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations;
7 That the cry of the Saints, and of the blood of the Saints, shall cease to come up into the ears of the Lord of Saboath, from the earth, to be avenged of their enemies.
8 Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold it cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Amen.

"Beginning in the 1830s, LDS missionaries carried manuscript copies of the above revelation with them in their missionary journeys, and "frequently read it to their congregations in various parts of the United States" (Roberts, p. 315). The entire revelation was printed in 1851 in Liverpool, England, in a pamphlet entitled, "The Pearl of Great Price." This was a decade before the first shot of the Civil War on April 12, 1861. Thus, the prediction was made 28 years before its fulfillment, and was printed and circulated in England and in the United States at least ten years before."-

Alma Allred (op. cit., p. 166) explains that Joseph's prophecy about war being poured out on all nations had a wider application than just the Civil War, in spite of Mr. Geisler's uninspired translation of the text. Allred also explains that Orson Hyde was mocked by Eastern papers after an 1850 public speech in which he stated that war was about to divide the nation. In 1862, after the beginning of the Civil War, he wrote an "I told you so" letter to the editor of the Missouri Republican of Springfield. What he wrote shows that Joseph's prophecies of war went well beyond the Civil War and, as Allred puts it, "included an additional, chilling detail of events yet future." Here is the excerpt from Orson Hyde:
You have scarcely yet read the preface of your national trouble. Many nations will be drawn into the American maelstrom that now whirls through our land; and after many days, when the demon of war shall have exhausted his strength and madness upon American soil, by the destruction of all that can court or provoke opposition, he will remove his headquarters to the banks of the Rhine.
Millennial Star, 24 (3 May 1862):274-275, emphasis added.

After the start of the Civil War an eastern paper gave this headline:

"We have in our possession a pamphlet, published at Liverpool, in 1851.... In view of our present troubles, this prediction seems to be in progress of fulfillment, whether Joe Smith was a humbug or not.... Have we not had a prophet among us?"
-----
(Philadelphia Sunday Mercury after the outbreak of the Civil War. Clipping in Journal History, 5 May 1861.)

Joseph Smith showed himself a humbug when he brought in his own ideas and practices, which departed from Christianity. He is among the fulfilled prophesy of false prophets that we, Christians, should be wary of, as prophesied by Jesus Christ. Here are some heretic teachings of Smith.

1. He followed non-Protestant Christians in rejecting the doctrine of justification by faith alone - indeed it is by faith alone!
If one has faith in Jesus Christ, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, he would be following the teachings of Christ - and of course good works will result from that! The key is, faith!

[31] and moved toward universalism by introducing a hierarchy of three glorious heavens, in which even the wicked had a place.

[32] In the late 1830s, Smith introduced baptism for the dead by proxy as a means to allow unredeemed souls to accept salvation in the afterlife

Seeking to relate Mormonism with Calvinistic ideas of assured salvation, Smith introduced a second anointing ritual, after which a participant was guaranteed virtually unconditional salvation.[35]

The later Smith also departed from traditional Protestantism in his view of the nature of God and humanity. Eventually Smith reduced the difference between God and man to one of degree. Both God and man were coeternal and uncreated.

Unlike the god of traditional Christianity, the god envisioned by Joseph Smith did not create the eternal spirits of humanity—he only organized them and provided them with a plan to follow in his footsteps.

God was God not because he was an ex nihilo creator, but because he had the greatest intelligence

After Smith's death, his successor Brigham Young and others built upon Smith's late teachings and introduced even more profound innovations. The resulting religious tradition defined the Mormonism of the Mormon pioneer era in the 19th century. An important part of this pioneer Mormonism is the Adam–God doctrine, which became the most prominent (but not exclusive) theology of 19th-century Mormonism.[42] Young taught that God the Father was Adam, a mortal man resurrected and exalted to godhood.

Proponents of this doctrine believed that Father Adam, as the subordinate member of a three-god council, created the earth.[44] Adam was both the common ancestor and the father of all spirits born on the earth.[45] After ascending again to his heavenly throne,[46] Adam returned to physically father Jesus by Mary.[47]

In contrast to traditional Christian notions that God is omnipotent and omniscient, modern Mormons regard God as governed by natural law.[67]

This is where I chime in and say that reading Greek and Hebrew is an absolute necessity to study of this subject. For instance, from the OP, part of the passage from Revelations 20:4 reads like this:

...and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image...

But the whole phrase turns on how one interprets the emphatic "oute" (and a few other difficult-to-translate words). The verse could also say this:

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them and the souls of them that were hewn through the witness of Jesus, and through the word of God, and [to those] which had not ever worshipped the image of the beast by receiving the mark upon their foreheads and upon their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

In fact, for reasons about which I will remain silent, I suspect this is the more accurate way to read it.
