160,000 people die every day. What is their eternal destiny?

Between 40,000 and 150,000 people go to Hell every day. Is this relevant to you?

Poll Survey: The World’s Mortality Rate

Over 162,000 will die on an average day. What is their eternal destiny? Obviously, we have no idea. However, some people have estimated that only 7% of the world’s population adheres to the Biblical plan of salvation. Even if that estimate is totally wrong and the number is actually 70%, that still means that over 48,000 are going to Hell every day.

What is the relevancy of these numbers? Should these numbers have any impact on our lives? I’m conducting a poll and would like your opinion on this issue.

Calculations:

World’s population: 7.08 billion
A little less than 1% (0.837%) of the world’s population died last year
7.08 billion x .837% (.00837) = 59,259,600 deaths a year
59,259,600 divided by 365 days = 162,355 deaths a day
162,355 x 30% (.30) = 48,706 people going to Hell

We can share what we believe with those who will listen. However we can not force anyone to convert; conversion must be freely chosen or it is meaningless.

That's 112.5 every second! Wondering if any will find the huge # of deaths depressing in and of itself.

I would imagine that even God would find me, although an atheist, to be charismatic and downright groovy enough to allow into his kingdom.

Agreed, I fear death all the time. Unfortunately, it seems that I will merely become another one of 160,000 to die each day.

Nah, by that time it will be more like 300,000/day :2razz:

I think it rather helps to not think about it though.

I'm the only one I have any control over. The rest is on them

Death is nothing to fear. Pain and suffering are, especially in large quantities, and in such situations death can be a benevolent force.

Life without end like a touch that turns everything to gold. It seems great at first, but it's actually a horrible curse upon closer inspection.

Christian perspective:

They are 'asleep in death' until the resurrection on the 'last day'. The unrighteous and righteous alike are resurrected to earth.

So they will live again, what happens after their resurrection determines their eternal state.

Have you heard of "near-death" experiences? Thousands of people from all cultures and religious backgrounds have experienced leaving their bodies due to physical trauma such as heart attacks, drowning, etc. They tell very similar stories of going through a tunnel and seeing a "Being of light" at the other end and feeling tremendous love and peace emminating from this Being. They often meet deceased family members who joyfully greet them but then tell them "it's not your time yet" There is a recent book on the New York best seller list called "Proof of Heaven" written by a neurosurgeon who had this experience due to near fatal bacterial meningitis. He was not a believer in life after death until this experience. He was a typical American materialist who believed that science and the material universe was all there was. I bought a copy at Costco. These experiences show that we don't lie dormant in the ground waiting to be resurrected when the Lord returns. Our soul remains supremely aware after its separation from the body and it appears that we can see each other even without this piece of meat we call our body.

Don't know exactly what you would be planning to do about it, but I sure as hell know I don't want anything to do with it. Worry about your own soul.

The exact same types of experiences have been chronicled by some pilots undergoing high G forces training. The brain does wacky things when deprived of oxygen.

That's true. But some of these experiences, such as the neurosurgeons, happened under medical supervision where the brain was not functioning. One woman had the experience while undergoing brain surgery to remove a tumor. Her body was cooled down to below 70 degrees, her heart was stopped and the blood drained from her head. There were no brain waves. Her eyes were covered and she had instruments in her ears making clicking noises. So physically she could not hear or see, yet she later described what went on during the surgery, what was said between the surgical staff, what the instruments looked like. Modern medical techniques are making more of these experiences possible because we can now revive people who formerly would have stayed dead. It reminds me of the story of Marco Polo who journeyed to China from Venice and returned 20 years later with stories of the wonders of China. People didn't believe him. If others had made the trip, then the combined testimonies would have become more believable. The same is true of these near-death experiences. One, or a few people, would not make it believable. But thousands of people from every part of the world make it much, much more likely that it's fundamentally a real thing.

I used to be fascinated by NDE accounts but the thing is when you look into them, regarding what they see in the surgery room, there are always more rational explanations. There is just no hard evidence that people saw what they saw when they say they saw it. It doesn’t mean they are lying, but memories are malleable, especially when coming out of a traumatic experience.

This is a link to an article written by Dr. Steven Novella, a clinical neurologist and professor at Yale Medical School, explaining the phenomenon and why the accounts so far just aren’t compelling. He also talks about a study that was going to be done over the course of several years called the AWARE study, by Dr. Sam Parnia.

Since September 2008 Parnia has been part of the AWARE study (AWAreness during REsuscitation),[9] a study launched by the Human Consciousness Project, an international collaboration of scientists, physicians and nurses studying patients who survived cardiac arrest and reported a near-death experience (NDE).
Twenty-five participating hospitals across Europe and North America[10] examine reports of patients after their clinical death, several of whom are expected to have an out-of-body experience (OBE) with physical perceptions of their surroundings. A major objective of the AWARE study is to test whether the perceptions reported by these patients can be verified. One method involves a visual target being placed near the ceiling where it can only be seen by someone reading it from above; patients who report OBEs are then asked to describe it.

It certainly sounds like a facinating study. I wanted to know where it currently stands so I did some digging and found this:

The AWARE investigators have explained that owing to the exploratory nature of this study they do not anticipate there to be an end in the near future. Instead the study is likely to evolve into further research projects downstream with time. They are pleased to report the study is progressing well but have indicated that the results so far suggest more data and larger scale studies may be required. At this time, they anticipate being able to release the preliminary results obtained during the first five years of the study in September or October 2013 to mark the fifth anniversary of the launch of the study. This will be done through the appropriate scientific channels such as publications in scientific journals and possibly by means of a lecture, symposium or conference at a suitable venue if there is sufficient public interest. This would allow the data and results to be discussed in further detail.
AWARE Study update 2013

So it will be interesting to to take another look at this when the preliminary data is released later this year.

I see you trying to paint Christianity as the bad guy, here, have a quick lesson:

Only people who are Christians are subjected to Christian doctrine and afterlife. Those who do know of Christianity and are not part of it, are spared of this.

Also, 1bil people are Christian. 1bil out of 7bil. Not 7%.

Death is nothing to fear. Pain and suffering are, especially in large quantities, and in such situations death can be a benevolent force.

Life without end like a touch that turns everything to gold. It seems great at first, but it's actually a horrible curse upon closer inspection.

I would say that being is better than not being, of coarse is suffering and pain outweigh any joy then perhaps death is better, but other things being equal death is a terrible thing.

Christian perspective:

They are 'asleep in death' until the resurrection on the 'last day'. The unrighteous and righteous alike are resurrected to earth.

So they will live again, what happens after their resurrection determines their eternal state.

This is more or less my escatology.

How do you know this?

How does this even fall into the realm of possibly knowable information?

Because a priest told me this.

If you are ignorant of Christianity, then you will not be judged according to Christian dogmas. But people who are christians and who depart from the faith are still held accountable.

Calculations:

I don't believe in typical concepts of heaven and hell, and I believe we all go on to whatever plane of existence we need, in order to continue our very long journey of learning.

Why did you change the title of the thread in your poll?

7% isn't a very impressive success rate. And creating people who will be born and raised into that remaining 93% just so they can be consigned to hell is a pretty douchey thing to do.

Ok. How does HE know that?
