I hear this argument from time to time that the protestant work ethic (meaning some form of Calvinism) is the inspiration for modern capitalism most supported by Max Weber and his book on the "Protestant Work Ethic".
I found this article, which has alot of other interesting info, from a website called success-and-culture.net, which doesn't exist anymore but can be found here at Are Calvinists Predestined to Succeed? which is still archived by the online storage site Archive.org.
This information is also a little old probably 1999-2000 due to using statistics ranging from the years 95-97. So, this info may be a little outdated but the same argument remains.
This may be a little controversal to some. It's an attempt to explain away, I think resaonably, the "protestant work ethic" as being the SOLE inspiration for modern capitalism and goes into a little detail about Max Weber and his book on the "Protestant Work Ethic.
.
This guy is a Catholic who's main interest is/was the study of the effect of culture and religion on the result of individualism. You can visit Archive.org to see his website on other issues that are interesting. Success-and-Culture.net Homepage

Are Calvinists Predestined to Succeed?
I hope you can read this and reply and see what you think about this rebuttal against Max Weber?
